Hi friends. We stayed in the Jaguar Inn, which is inside the Tikal National Park and we had a second floor room. There were a couple of fruiting trees nearby and a variety of birds took turns to come and feed on the fruit over the two days we were there. One irregular visitor was the Keel-billed Toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus), though they usually flew into a position that was hopeless from a photographic point of view. This shot still has some annoying branches in the way, but I thought it was acceptable to post. They were quite common and we observed them feeding in the canopy around the ruins throughout our stay.

Keel-billed Toucans live in lowland rainforest from southern Mexico through Central America and into northern Columbia. They are a social bird, usually found in family groups of 3 to 12 individuals. They spend most of the day flying between fruiting trees and fruit is their principal source of food. They grow to 55cm (22 in) and the bill can take up one third of their body length. Despite its cumbersome appearance, the bill is made from keratin, a light yet strong protein.

Hello Chris,
I can imagine the experience of having these striking Keel-billed Toucans flying around where you stayed! Wonderful!
This is a great sharp shot of it, the branches removing any possibility of an aviary capture. They are not at all annoying and contribute to the natural feeling of the shot and the lateral POV is great.
Thanks and all the best,

Hi Chris

Great shot of this Toucan - I have never seen one close to. I have been to Tikal before and am visiting again at Christmas, so maybe I will be lucky! Good eye contact and focus too.
