The White-necked Jacobin (Florisuga mellivora) is a large and attractive hummingbird that ranges from Mexico south to Peru, Bolivia and south Brazil. It is also found on Tobago and in Trinidad.

The White-necked Jacobin is a widespread inhabitant of forest, usually being seen at a high perch or just above the canopy.

The approximately 12 cm long male White-necked Jacobin is unmistakable with its white belly and tail, a white band on the nape and a dark blue hood. Immature males have less white in the tail and a conspicuous rufous patch in the malar region. Females are highly variable, and may resemble adult or immature males, have green upperparts, white belly, white-scaled green or blue throat, and white-scaled dark blue crissum, or be intermediate between the aforementioned plumages, though retain the white-scaled dark blue crissum. Females are potentially confusing, but the pattern on the crissum is distinctive and not shared by superficially similar species.

These birds usually visit flowers of tall trees and epiphytes for nectar, and also hawk for insects.

Hi Mario,wow I sure wish I could travel around more than I do and to have a crack at photoing such a wonderful little member of the bird world.Hummingbirds are all, without exception amongst the prettiest things there are on this old world of ours,for they are colourful and so very tiny and yet tough enough to hold their own in this world and are just such a joy to behold.This photo is a joy to behold,from the metallic colours to the crisp focus and point of view and the fact the little bird is hovering and the wing blur,it just is eye candy!
This photo shows us all why we need to preserve habitat and protect life on this planet and it is because it is so wonderful in it's variety and just a joy to see.Thank you for sharing this little gem with us all!Hummers are only found in North and South America,lucky us,eh!

Bob

Hello Mario,

Wow! What a wonderful picture of this so nice hummingbird!!! Your POV is fantastic as so is the details quality. Excellent exposition. 1/1250 was sufficient for the wings by keeping some movement with them!

The only 2 things maybe are:

- I would have removed the brown patch at the bottom of the picture;

- I would have leave more space left between the frame and the wing. If it is a full-framed picture, I would have then expand the canva in Photoshop.

Great pic!!!

Cheers and TFS :-)

Michel
