Pyrgus frittilarius (Poda, 1761)
Safflower Skipper, Dunkelbrauner Dickkopffalter, Esperia del cardamom, Ajedrezada.

Another skipper to add to the TN collection of Hesperiidae. Widely but locally distributed over central and southern Europe in dry grassland locations.
The butterflies appear in one extended generation from the middle of June to early September. Males show light woolly hairs on the forewings, the darker females do not. Caterpillars feed on Potentilla and Malva.

Wing span: 32 – 35 mm.

The picture was taken in the grasslands of the ice age sand dunes called “Sandberge”, in eastern Lower Austria, near the small village of Oberweiden, on a cool and rainy afternoon, June 10, 2004.

Best greetings,

Great POV Peter. This is a great closeup showing crisp, clear detail. Good exposure and very well composed. Thanks.

I very much like the simple composition of this image of your beautiful butterfly, Peter.
