Dabbling with a compact camera:

The title "The Great Houdini" refers to a famous escape artist that was able to shed chains, straight jackets and hand cuffs by wiggling and jerking. That is an analogy to what these caterpillars do at metamorphosis: shed the larval cuticle by wiggling and jerking.

These are Peacock caterpillars (Lepidoptera; Nymphalidae; Inachis io; Tagpfauenauge; le Paon de jour) living on Nettle. Before metamorphosis they leave the plant and look for some solid branch to attach themselves in preparation for pupation.

Very good macro, presentation of this caterpillars!

Hello Dietrich!
Funny title to picture with Lepidoptera caterpillar :) You are right, metamorphosis is similar to things done by this artist :)
Nice tree larvae in typical place for this species and with typical pose :)

Hi Dietrich, very fantasious title, perfect for this pic! And what a great sharpness in your work, not easy to take a pic so perfect like that. Thanks for share, have a nice day,LUCIANO

Hi Dietrich,

The black caterpillars are very dramatic in appearance against the brilliant green background, makes for an attractive photo. Good detail, composition and exposure. Very nice!

Lieber Dieter,

Hello Dietrich,
When I first viewed your thumbnail photo it looked like the words hi, and then I brought it up on the computer and saw that it was actually three beautiful caterpillars.
Excellent job of capturing such interesting insects. Gorgeous colors with fine detail!! TFS.
