Boloria napaea (Hoffmannsegg, 1804)
female.

Mountain Fritillary, Ähnlicher Perlmutterfalter, Bergparelmoervlinder, Fjällpärlefjäril, Fjellperlemorvinge, Tunturihopeatäplä, Nacré des Renouées, Perlada de Montaña

Family: Nymphalidae
Subfamily: Heliconiinae

Wing span: 34 – 42 mm

Shown here with wings closed a few weeks ago, this image might complete the presentation of this rarely shown exquisitely coloured species that inhabits high elevations of European Alps and the Pyrenees as well as northern Scandinavian mountains. Initially, this image was added as a workshop to my first posting, but I was encouraged by some of you to present it on its own. Thank you, Alexei.

As stated before, that was one of the last happy captures of mountain butterflies when dark clowds of rain rapidly ended a sunny day of summer that took me out for a ten hours hiking trip up to the glaciers of Vernagt. And it was the last occasion to capture that pretty female butterfly with open wings. The very next moment the bad weather caused it to take its resting pose with wings closed. Low light conditions under an overcast sky and motion blur caused by a strong breeze have been a bit of a challenge.

The plant:

Senecio abrotanifolius (L.)
Eberrauten-Greiskraut, Bärenkraut

Family: Asteraceae.

Location:

The gorges of Rofen near Vent, Oetztal valley, on alpine meadows at 2100m above sealevel, at the edge of mountain meadows continuously maintained since at least 2500 years. The place the picture was taken is close to Rofen, Austria's highest permanently inhabited farmhouses, located since mediaval times at an elevation of 2050 meters above sea level.

Hi Peter,
This is an unsual specie to me! I love its French name! Colors and exposure are natural with superb details and composition. Plain green background makes your lovely model stand out well. Thanks,
Claudine

A wonderful display of the upper wings of this exotic butterfly, Peter. Superb details and colours. The subject sits pretty on those lovely yellow flowers.
I saw the other version with its wings closed and that one is equally fabulous.
Thanks and best regards.
Ram

Your good use of depth of field is what makes this one stick out...that and the wonderful colours..Very good then...but I still REALLY love the one just prior to this..You do so good at landscape..maybe the combination is important! I shall have to make a mental note
Bob

Hi Peter,
You always compose your frame in a pleasing, artistic manner..
Beautiful specimen, excellent POV here.
Very good colors, details, exposure, and complimentary BG.
(Good job on the clean-up) :)
Well done!

Dear Peter,
Yes I'm glad you posted this open wing macro of B. napaea as well. You made good use of the limited DOF by focusing on the body and showing the dense hair scales of this Alpine and high Nordic species and the composition on the yellow flower against a neutral natural BG is excellent. The POV is perfect.
Thanks for sharing this fine image and for your kind critique on my 500th posting!
With best wishes,
Ivan

Hallo Peter !
Vielen Dank !
Valerie.

Hallo Peter
This butterfly is richly blessed with lots of beautiful fluffy hair, lovely stripes and markings. You have captured it with great detail and care. It is a very pleasing image with lots of detail to appreciate. The detail of the furry body is well seen and displays well against the neutral green background. To me the flower it is resting on is also eye-catching and pleasing to look at. The total image is presented in the well known "Peter Stoeckl" style and manner and cannot be missed. It has a friendly and warm feel to it. Focus, composition and use of light is very pleasing, and it was once again a pleasure to look at it. Thanks for sharing.
Friendly regards
Anna

Hallo Peter!

Anne

Hello Peter,
Wonderful and sunny capture!
I like a lot the colour palette displayed here, the intensity of the yellow and its contrast with the subtle green tones of the blurred background.
On the subject, great sharpness and fine details.
My compliments and thanks for share.
Best regards,
JM

Hello Peter,

Butterfly is shown with very good sharpness. The pattern of the wings can be very well seen. Colors have been rendered well as there are saturated, vivid and looks natural. Flowers colors matches well with the colors of the insect.
