Silky Ringlet.

Erebia gorge (Hübner, 1804)
Silky Ringlet, Seidenglanz-Mohrenfalter, Moiré chamoisé, ...

Family: Nymphalidae
Subfamily: Satyrinae

Wingspan: 34 – 38 mm.

During the few short weeks of summer at high elevations close to the glaciers of Oetztal valley, there is an unexpected variety of life to be observed.

Numerous moths, burnets in good numbers, and also several species of butterflies, some of them endemic to those elevations - like some dark ones that followed my path through lonesome and silent places far above the treeline.

Erebia gorge, the Silky Ringlet, is described to be a complex species with a varienty of different patterns. Fresh specimens would often show a silky appearance. Erebia gorge may be found in the Pyrenees, the western and central Alpine chain, in Slovenia, Gran Sasso in Italy, the Velebit, Carpatians, Tatra. It is confined to elevations between 1800 and 3000m.

Caterpillars feed on grass such as Festuca alpina, and Poa minor.

Location:

At an elevation of 2650m near Vernagt glacier -
close to the place of previous posting on Nigritella.

Hello Peter,
The Austrian Alps must be a paradise for different Erebia species but sometimes a headache trying to sort them out!
You captured this Erebia gorge to a high technical standard and taken from a good POV to show the iridescence of the wings as well as their colours. The butterfly contrasts well with the rocky BG in this fine composition.
Thanks and it makes me look forward to summer!
Best wishes,
Ivan

Hi, dear Peter.
I am very glad to see your new picture and as usual of highest quality. POV, composition of the shot and pose (wingspread) of the fine butterfly are superb. I like how well all features (especially texture and colour pattern) are reproduced. Stone dead BG is reflected very well too and contrasts perfectly with alive creature. Bravo. Perfect shot, once more.
Alexei.

Hallo Peter

Thank you for sharing this fine macro study of a Silky Ringlet, a first for me Peter, your dorsal viewpoint produced a totally sharp image with great pattern and colouration detail, TFS indeed my friend.

excellent composition and details very careful

Lieber Peter!

As Grüessli

Markus

Lieber Peter,
Anne

Hi Peter,
superb capture teacher
perfect framing and lighting,
details and color atractives
greetings friend
Thanks for your kind comments encourage me

Delighted to hear from you, Peter!
Hope you are keeping well.
A controversy is raging on TN these days regarding the authenticity and sincerity of critiques.
Now, when I see your picture of the Silky Ringlet, my prompt reaction is pure admiration for the picture because it is a technically superb image and has been presented aesthetically.
I say so with total honesty and don't see any reason why my sincerity could be surmised as guile.
It is a pity TN is increasingly getting mired into controversies on inconsequential issues.
Nevertheless, I am an incorrigible optimist and hope things would settle back to normal soon.
Sorry for deviating into an unpleasant discussion.
Warm regards,
Ram
