Scarce Copper.

Alpine meadows in early summer are butterfly paradise. Species that have been called "scarce" in the lowlands can be met in abundance there, such as the Scarce Fiery Copper in the meadows of the Rofen Valley above Vent, at an elevation of 2050 meters above sea level. When you go there in the early morning or late afternoon, you may be happy to see dozens of fiery red blinking jewels sitting in the grass next to your path.

The butterfly:

Heodes virgaureae (Linnaeus, 1758),
the male.

Scarce Copper,
Dukatenfalter,
Morgenrood,
Vitfläckig Guldvinge,
Oransjegullvinge,
Dukatsommerfugl,
Argo verga d’oro,
Argus Satiné,
Manto de Oro,
Czerwończyk dukacik,
Ohniváčik zlatobyľový,
Ohniváček celíkový,
Loistokultasiipi.

Family Lycaenidae (Blues).

Wing span 30 - 35mm.

Only the males of this species show bright golden red iridescent structural colours on the upper side of their wings, obviously a strongly developed signal for intraspecies communication between the sexes.

Females of that species look quite different being much less bright in colour and showing dark spots on the upper side of their wings.

Caterpillars feed on Rumex. Butterflies can be encountered from June to August in one generation.

The species is locally distributed from Portugal and Spain, central and northern Europe, central Asia to Mongolia. Not reported from the UK, northwestern France, the Netherlands, southern Italy. In central Europe, Heodes virgaureae prefers mountain locations, going up to approximately 2000m in the Alps.

The plant:

Senecio doronicum L.
Gämswurz-Greiskraut.
European mountain meadows from 1000 - 3000m above sea level.

The location:

The picture was taken on a mountain meadow in the Tyrol at an elevation of approximately 2050m above sea level in the highest parts of the Oetztal Valley, near the village of Vent.

The camera:

SONY DSC-H5, 3072 x 2304 pixel, sRGB, 16mm, F/4, 1/1000 sec., ISO-125; 15.07.2006, 16:28.

Postwork: Photoshop Elements, cropped at the sides, slightly sharpened, BG cleaned, downsized to the web.

Hope you enjoy. Thank you for looking.
Have a very good weekend.

Oh! Peter! What a fantastic picture! Your pov and composition are lovely to say the least! The nice green blurry bg compliments so well the yellow flower and the insect! The butterfly too participated so well by having that nice position! Excellent picture, Peter and TFS,

Hello Peter,
Another outstanding butterfly shot. : )
I love your simple butterfly compositions. They are just gorgeous.
Love the back-lit wings (with the beautiful browns) and the pose on the flower.
Sharp details against a pretty blurred BG.
TFS. : )

very beautifull photo shot, and capture and colore;-)

Hallo Peter,

Mornin' Peter,
This is a gorgeous picture of the L. virg. portrayed on the yellow splendour of this beautiful Senecio (which we don't have in Sweden)! It's a very attractive and harmonious composition with the mild, green background - technically flawless, aesthethically magnificent. Thanks a lot for this valuable contribution and for the informative note.
Wish you a good day,
Goran

Very nice shot, Peter! Superb lighting. Very good composition with this nice flower
Best regards
JJ

Magnificent close up.POV,lighting, clear details, framing, blurred BG,colors,3D effect and composition are excellent.
TFS...:-)

Hallo Peter,
Heinz

Hi Peter

Have been out of range for internet connection over the last few days. Been in a remote area of New Zealand called The Catlins, so now it is time for me to catch up on what has been happening.

Excellent shot. Well done on everything here. Thanks. -)
