Wingspan: 30 - 32 mm.

Meadows are wet from the dew, and dozens of golden red blinking jewels appear at once in the grass when the first rays of sun come down to the valley: males of a butterfly of the family of Lycaenids (Blues), the subspecies "eurydame" of the Purple-edged Copper, Lycaena hippothoë (Linnaeus 1761). Subspecies eurydame is smaller than the nominal species, and the males do not show the bluish purple iridescence that is typical for its cousins from the lowlands. This makes Lycaena hippothoë eurydame look similar to Lycaena virgaureae, the Scarce Copper, that shows distinctly clear marginal spots on hindwings, and males usually do not show dark discoidal spots on forewings. In July 2006, I could see both species flying together at the same location near Vent in the Tyrol, mistaking them for Lycaena virgaureae only for quite a while.

> The female looks quite different being much less bright in colour and showing dark spots on the upper side of her wings.

Distribution: Central and Southern Alps of Austria, France, Switzerland, Italy, Appeninnes, at an elevation of 2000m - 2500m. The butterflies are on their wings in one extended generation in July and August.

The nominal species L. hippothoë hippothoë is reported from northern Spain, central France, central, northern, and eastern Europe. Not reported from Portugal, Ireland, the UK, the Netherlands, southern Italy, the Balkan, Greece.

Feeding plant of caterpillars: Rumex acetosa, Polygonum distorta.

Probably due to a hot early summer the specimen looks a bit worn by mid of July already.

Location: The path leading through the valley of Rofen to from the village of Vent to Vernagt cottage and glacier, at an elevation of approx. 2100 meters.

Beautiful shot. I like the compostion. I was wandering maybe you could crop it a little bit more. But now i think it looks great without additional croping :-)
Best wishes

Hi Peter.
Next your charming and favorite for me subject: butterfly on the pictorial BG. And I also like to photograph at earlier morning.

I like your choice of pictured subject. It is beautiful and very expressive. Perfect quality of your picture to allow getting a great pleasure seeing this small chef-d'oeuvre.

Amazing stem and its incline, beautiful and perfectly reproduced butterfly at nice position, pleasant to eye nicely blurred and coloured BG. Their combination makes a strong esthetic impression.

Bravo, my dear friend. My best wishes and TFS.
Alexei.

Hallo Peter,

Hello Peter,
You show this somewhat worn alpine sub-species of the Scarce Copper in the best possible way: sharp with fine lighting, excellent Bg hinting the alpine habit, and super composition.
Well done and TFS,
Best wishes, Ivan

Hallo Peter,

Gracias y saludos... Ricardo

A true composition starting from a butterfly Peter, where the hanger and the diffuse bottom have the same protagonism the same as the imposing blue sky.
Simple, delicate, with focus and brightness offering details and sharpness with a really beautiful palette of colors.
The framing works to the perfection with the captured point of view. Thank you and regards... Ricardo

Hi Peter

Soothing, visually pleasing, and very stimulating. The clean mountain air, the rich morning light, and the freshness of the view edged against the clear blue sky plus the faded image of the mountain as backdrop all adds to make this a stunning posting. Then I did not even talk about the beauty of the butterfly yet. That brilliant dash of orange that wants to jump out of the frame and come and flutter around my PC. An impressive package.

The vertical composition was an excellent choice and the fact that you did not crop the photo somewhere just below the butterfly, but allowed an extended view of the stalk of grass, gave it an added dimension. Lovely colours and fabulous details enhanced by a perfect exposure rounded it off and the result is a splendid photo.

Good work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Lieber Peter,

Hi Peter,
It's really good this uncommon pose of the butterfly!
I like the same orientation of the insect and the plant, and the perpendicualr direction marked by the wings axis, almost aligned with the mountain.
Excellent DOF used here, you got a perfect background to this scene.
Details and sharpness on the insect are so good that we can enjoy to look at it many times.
I like very much this vertical composition also.
Congratulations, thanks for share and warm regards,
JM

Hi Peter

Hi Peter

A little late...i know...sorry...but this raelly is an outstanding composition!
I mean the slightly diagonal positioning of the straw, the perfect focus on the BG, that splendid 2-toned blurred BG...everything fell into place here! Terrific result!
Further more, the positioning of the subject here is great, the colors are amazing and the details crispy-clear!
A superb job, my friend!

Bravo and TFS
