Family: Nymphalidae
Subfamily: Melitaeinae

Wing span: 36 – 42 mm

Once a common and wide spread butterfly in most parts of Europe, just missing in the southern Iberian peninsula, the mediterranean islands, and southern Greece, absent also from most parts of Great Britain and from Ireland. Flying in one generation from June to August from the lowlands up into the mountains to approximately 2000m in both dry and humid habitats as long as there are enough flowers in blossom within good reach. Caterpillars are feeding on a broad spectre of plants such as Plantago, Veronica, Melampyrum, Digitalis, Linaria.

During the last decades, the species has been getting rarer and rarer, getting confined to uncultivated and extensively cultivated areas only, and therefore remaining a much more frequent sight in those steep and barren Alpine mountain areas out of reach from modern agroindustrial activities than in the surrounding fertilized green lowlands.

The species is very hard to tell from very similar species M. britomartis, M. aurelia, M. parthenoides, so there will always remain some mystery when meeting a specimen of that group – even after taking a reasonably well detailed picture.

The upper side.

The picture was taken in the most convenient time of late afternoon when the air is getting cooler, and all day active butterflies would look for a good sleeping place to spend the night.

The complimenting colours are remarkably clean. Not a drop of noise and so well lit. It will be a bit but soon I shall get back to macro for a while. Not as good as this of course:-)

Hallo Peter,
Helmut

Peter, your butterfly images, mostly against the BG of sky, are superlative creations with your compact camera. This is yet another wonderful picture obtained with meticulous forethought about manual settings.
The subject and its flower perch combine into a very pleasing composition against the grey sky.
Regards.
Ram

Dear Peter,
A very fine capture of athalia resting in the closed wing position. Your characteristic POV is great and taken with excellent sharpness and natural colours.
Athalia is a common species here, especially this summer.
During the next few months I am going to be inactive on TN as we will be moving to a flat, but I hope to be more active befor the end of the year.
Thanks and best regards to you,
Ivan

Lieber Peter,

Hi, dear Peter.
This is phenomenally absolutely. Outstanding work. It is impossible to imagine a better scene and selected POV as well as a flash work. Nicely blurred neutral BG underlines the vividness of colours and beautifulness of the main pictured subject. All tiniest details of the fine flower and amazing butterfly are shown extremely well. Sharpness is exceptional. I love the blameless and very impressive diagonal composition of the shot too. Bravo and once more bravo, dear friend.
Alexei.
P.S. Now I have a bit more free time. Nevertheless, I continue to live in summer countryside house almost all days where Internet is absent. I have many new photos and have not any opportunity to share them here. I am very pleased with your too high appraisals of my rather modest pictures. And I will try to correspond to them.

Dear Alpine neighbour,
I have no words to decribe the beauty of your photo, it's technically marvellous while being extremely aesthetic. A true masterpiece! Bravo! Please reconsider your decision and come back to TrekNature with new photos. I can't wait to see them!
Have a great 2013, best regards from the neighbourhood, László
