Celastrina argiolus.

To Eddie.

Posting to TN is one of the wonderful processes of giving and taking. The fact of getting instant and thoughtful responses from an audience from all over the world to images presented to that forum has enormous and very positive effects on the improval of techical and artistical skills, the knowledge of equipment, the knowledge of different cultures, the knowlege of nature for all of us who contribute to this site.

This posting is dedicated to our friend Eddie – Eduard Baak (snowfalken). Eddie, a 3D characters animator by his main profession, is a master of artistic photography, and he is also contributing very elaborate, well considered, wisely structured analytical critiques of outstanding quality to TN. Like many of us, I have had the honour of receiving some of Eddie’s critiques. I owe him a lot. Thank you, dear Eddie.

Celastrina argiolus (Linnaeus, 1758)

Holly Blue

Family: Lycaenidae (Blues)

Wingspan: 25 – 30 mm

The image is showing a second generation Holly Blue at rest, and it is definitely not the first one shown here on TN. It is hard to resist the elfin-like silver beauty of this little butterfly that prefers to stay in the shadows of deciduous forests and delivers an interesting object for macro photography under low light conditions.

Information on the biology and distribution of this unusual little Blue may be seen in my previous posting.

Holly Blue caterpillars are prepared to accept a broad variety of different feeding plants. More than twenty of them have been determined, among them Evonimus, Frangula, Rubus. In spite of the caterpillar's very unspecialized feeding, the Holly Blue does not occur in large numbers but seems to lead a rather solitary life.

This shot was taken next to my home in Vienna in the summer of 2006, at the edge of a garden in the street where I live.

The camera: Sony DSC-H5, 3072 x 2304 pixels, sRGB, 17mm macro zoom (equivalent 110mm at full size SLR), F/4, 1/125 sec., ISO-125, hand held, no flash. 21.07.2006, 17:18.

Postwork: Photoshop Elements, slightly cropped, resized to web, resharpened, levels slighty adjusted.

Hi, dear Peter, once again.
I did not read this note before writing to reply on your comments to my last picture. Now I see how I was right. Brilliant heart dedication and note. I agree with every your word.

Brilliant is your charming shot too. You managed to show its specific features with terrific skill. Amazing direct POV and superb composition. I like highest level of colour and texture reproduction as well as the describing of the shooting technique. I also like very nice scene, attractive plant with little flowers and very pleasant colour palette o the smooth BG. My best regards and warm greetings. Bravo.

Hello Peter,
this is a nice capture of this small butterfly.
+++ I like the POV as it clearly shows the patterns on the wings.
A good composition as well.
Sharp with good detail.
--- Nothing :)
Well done,

Chapeau !!

Ciao Peter,
