Lasiommata megera.

Lasiommata megera (Linnaeus, 1767)

Wall Brown
Le Satyr

Family: Satyridae
Ordo: Lepidiptera

Wingspan: 45 - 50 mm

Saturday, the 20th of May 2006: A low pressure area passing the centre of Europe. Torrential rain the night before. A bright sunny morning. Fairly windy. Clear sky with white clouds all over. So let's go, take the sunglasses, and a raincoat - just in case. And not to forget a camera.

A limestone hill called Eichkogel, near the town of Moedling, South Eastern Lower Austria. I go there very often.

Lush green vegetation of May at its best. Flowers all over the place. Butterflies chasing each other - gone with the wind the very next moment.

The most nervous ones in the sunshine were a pair of Satyridae at the edge of the forest. Thanks to a shadow of quick moving clouds, a capture was possible in the end.

Lasiommata megera - nothing special, but quick. Widely distributed over southern and central Europe, southern parts of the UK, Ireland, southern Scandinavia, North Africa. From the coast up to the mountains to 2000 meters above sea level. Two to three generations from March to September.

Caterpillars feeding on various kinds of grass - Poa, Dastylis, Festuca.

Thank you for looking. Have a very good weekend.

Nice picture Peter. Simple but efficient composition. Perfect sharpness on the right place, i.e. the eyes.

Hi Peter,
An excellent composition on this butterfly shot. Beautiful vivid colors, and the detail is very sharp. Great isolation on the single flower with the perfect oof backround. Great job!

Hallo Peter,

Hi Peter

Well done on a very good shot. Nicely composed, good POV, crisp, clear sharp and with very good depth of colour. :-)

Hi Peter,
A great POV at the subject level, that shows the both sides of wings, the head, the eye,... And a very sort DOF with the focal plane in the midle!
I think this a common butterfly in Spain. It's an all-terrain one! Here it moves permanently: I'm tired out to shot it in vain. Very good capture.
José M.
PS. Weather: After dust and 40ºC coming from Africa, some cold air has droppen temperature to 28ºC. Flowers are accelerated and people do not know if they have allergic crisis or viruses.

Hi Peter,

Great picture of this butterfly. Sharp, clear and good background

Very good Close up shot you have posted. The Composition, POV, DOF and BG make it great. TFS,

Good photo with a unusual perspective. Great composition, colors and sharpness but i feel if F8 could have given you better DOF ( I'am not sure whether shallow DOF was your preffered choice, if yes then dont bother about my comments :-) )
