The Lady has arrived.

Vanessa cardui (Linnaeus, 1758)
Painted Lady
Distelfalter
Distelvlinder
Tistelfjäril
La Belle Dame
Bella dama
Bella Dama o Cardero

Family: Nymphalidae
Ordo: Lepidoptera

Wingspan 55 - 60mm.

A native butterfly of Southern Europe and Africa. Does not hibernate in Europe north of the Alps but can be seen as a regular visitor each year to all over Europe, the UK, Ireland, even Iceland.

In central Europe, migrant butterflies arrive in large numbers with southwestern winds in May - like on May 20, 2006 in Lower Austria - as shown.

The offspring of freshly arrived migrants can be seen in the northern parts of Europe in two to three generations from May to October. Caterpillars feed on thistles, and nettles. Not clear to me whether there is a migration back to the south in Autumn or not. According to literature, hibernation is not successful in the usual cold winters north of the Alpine chain in Europe.

Excellent photo of this beauty!
Also common in Portugal.
Very good POV!
Very good on colours!
Perfect DOF and stunning details!
5* and TFS!

A pristine individual on a very contrasting background. The composition is quite subtle, combining a front view, with a good show of the wings. Good work.

Hi Peter!
Very fast Lady! I didn't saw any this year in my place. Very nice photo with good POV and details. Muddy BG isn't maybe perfect, but butterfly itself looks great.

Hallo Peter, not rare but well presented. The margins of the fore-wings just divide the picture in two equal triangles. The important one is filled with the vivid colours painted on this lady.

Hello Peter, very nice macro; sharpness, colors, light, composition, everything is excellent ! TFS

Heinz

Hi Peter
A lovely lady it is, well captured and presented. The composition looks good with the diagonal positioning and frontal POV. The colours are very natural and the details are crispy and sharp. Although the BG is rather difficult when photographing an insect sitting on the ground I think this one worked out quite good. The darkish earthy colour actually enhances the butterfly very well. The exposure was also well managed.
Great work and TFS.
Regards
Loot
