This is the second picture during my visit at the Zoo in Antwerp.
These mother have to geting three weeks later an calf.

Hippopotamuses are one of the largest extant mammals in the world. Hippos are considered megafauna, but unlike all other African megafauna, hippos have adapted for a semi-aquatic life in freshwater lakes and rivers.

Because of their enormous size, hippopotamuses are difficult to weigh in the wild. Most estimates of the weight come from culling operations that were carried out in the 1960s. The average weights for adult males ranged between 1500-1800 kg (3,300-4,000 lbs). Females are smaller than their male counterparts, with average weights measuring between 1300-1,500 kg (2,900-3,300 lbs). Older males can get much larger, reaching at least 3,200 kg (7,100 lbs). Male hippos appear to continue growing throughout their lives; females reach a maximum weight at around age 25.

Hippos average 3.5 meters (11 ft) long, 1.5 meters (5 ft) tall at the shoulder. The range of hippopotamus sizes overlaps with the range of the White Rhinoceros; use of different metrics makes it unclear which is the largest land animal after elephants. Even though they are bulky animals, hippopotamuses can run faster than a human on land. Estimates of their running speed vary from 30 km/h (18 mph) to 40 km/h (25 mph), or even 50 km/h (30 mph). The hippo can maintain these higher speeds for only a few hundred meters or yards.

I hope a lot reaction, I'm no specialist in macro work.

Have a nice weekend.

Hi John,
Nice detail, color, and exposure in your profile headshot..The only thing I might've done different, would've been to crop the top edge, eliminating the man-made element.
Well done!
Howard

always a bit comical and friendly looking these killers in the wild can take off an arm with ease
i like the warm tones here against the usually dull skin...
we have had them outside our room on safari browsing the bushes..at night..when it cool
your shot makes me think its time to go RAW!!
thanks

John,
One of our Hippos at the Calgary Zoo died 5 weeks ago. So very sad. I did get photos of them both, however. Shall post next week. One was making "poo".
Loved your notes.
The colours are beautiful.
Mario.

Hello John, I like the tight crop on this one and I like the way the Hippo is looking at you with a very funny look, well seen and well done, thanks!

Mario

Hello John. You have very few posts here and I am looking forward to see more from your caliber in photography. You have wide variation of species posted and this is a nice shot of a hippo even if it was from the zoo. The sharpness and detail are well seen and the reflection on the surface make a good perspective. Well done and keep posting. Regards. Jusni

Hi John,
Nicely framed and pinsharp image of this hippo, regarded as one of the most dangerous having killed more humans than any other animal.Nice rippled reflections in the water and you have created good details on the hippo.
Well done and TFS.

Hi John,
very sharp shot of the hippo. I like its shiny skin and its glance. Well presented in good gradual blurring of the background.
The water too gives an artistic effect.
Very catchy subject too.

Foozi
