The Edible Frog (Rana kl. esculenta) is a name for a common European frog, also known as the common water frog or green frog (however, this latter term is also used for the North American species Rana clamitans). It is used for food, particularly in France for the delicacy Frogs' legs. Females are between 5 to 9 cm long, males between 6 to 11 cm.

Rana esculenta is the fertile hybrid of the Pool Frog (Rana lessonae) and the Marsh Frog (Rana ridibunda), hence the addition of the "kl." (for klepton or synklepton) in the species name. During the ice ages[clarify] the population of the common ancestor of both species was split into two. These populations diverged, but remained genetically close enough to be able to create fertile hybrids. However, when edible frogs mate with each other, their offspring are often misformed, so there are no pure populations of edible frogs. The hybrid populations are propagated by female edible frogs mating with males of one of the parental species.

Bonjour Annick,

hi annick!
nice macro and great with
that sharp eye!

Hi Annick,
It's so enjoyable this close approach!
I like so much all the vivid colours and details got on the frog, its skin texture detail is pretty amazing.
It's so good the catchlight and the small insect seen on the head.
My compliments and thanks for share it.
Best regards,

Hi Annick,
as soon as I saw the thumbnail I smils knowing we have another outstanding shot from you.
The brilliant low-down POV is the main aspect of this shot that makes it what it is.
Sharp with superb clarity and detail.
Very well done,

Hi Annick, well captured excellent detail in the face and a good eye catch, lovely colours and well composed, Cheers Rick

Hello Annick!
At firt I would like to say "hi" after 1 month of absence :)
According to picture I would like to say this is another very nice portrait photo. Very good DOF and POV (and no reflection on the water what I believe was not easy to keep). Maybe there is a little to much free space above the frog's head as for me but this is rather very small thing ;>
The DOF is so great that I can recognize an aphid specimen on the frog!
Bravo and TFS!

Hallo Annick,
Schitterende focus op het oog van de kikker. Het lage standpunt van waaruit de foto gemaakt is heel bijzonder. Fantastische dieptewerking.

Hi Annick,
Very sharp on the eye ball, good colour.
Very nice. The frog appears to have its breakfast on it's chin.
Well done,

Hi Annick,
Outstanding close-up shot of this moss covered frog. Spot-on focus on its eye with superb lighting. Lovely colours and I like the natural setting. The tiny bug adds interest. Excellent POV to portray it and very nicely composed. Kudos.

hello ANnick
lovely close up picture
the frog is beautiful and sharpness is very good
the little insect in the mouth gives a point of interest to the picture

Outstanding because of the focus on the eye, the bland, appropriate bachground, the bug, and the plants draped on the frog. Congratulations.

Bonjour Annick.
Trés belle image, superbes couleurs, belle netteté.Joli photo, amitiés.

Hi Annick, very cool shot!!!

Great image. The placement of the frog in the frame is excellent and the OOF green makes a wonderful background. That eye is tack sharp which really adds to the impact of the image.
