De la même famille que les cigognes, les hérons cendrés se caractérisent par un long cou, un bec long et pointu et de hautes pattes. Le héron cendré possède une excellente vue panoramique latérale et une très bonne vision binoculaire frontale. Son ouïe, également très développée, le fait réagir aux moindres bruits suspects. Le héron cendré atteint en général 95 cm de hauteur et une envergure de 1,85 m pour un poids de 1,5 à 2 kg.

Le héron cendré présente un plumage à dominante grise. Les jeunes ont un plumage plus terne : leur dos est gris-brunâtre, leur cou est gris et leur ventre est blanc rayé noir. Ils n'ont pas de "huppe". Les jeunes hérons acquièrent leur plumage d'adulte à l'âge de deux ans. Le héron cendré peut vivre 25 ans. Mais des hérons n'atteignent même pas un an
Grand échassier solitaire (en dehors de la période de nidification), le héron cendré se perche communément dans de grands arbres le long des étangs. Il fréquente tous les milieux humides et peu profonds. Apparemment lent, il va tout de même à 45 kilomètres à l'heure. C'est un migrateur partiel qui ne se déplace généralement pas au-delà de 500 kilomètres; le héron a un territoire peu étendu. Certains sujets demeurent même sédentaires. Quand il chasse, le héron cendré peut demeurer longtemps immobile, le cou dressé, en attendant le passage de sa proie. Lorsqu'elle passe à portée de son bec, il s'en saisit rapidement en projetant vers l'avant la partie supérieure de son cou.

Hi Vandael . This is such a natural shot of this Grey Heron. They seem to spend hours looking like this and waiting for a fish. taken with good detail and natural colours. You have used the light well

Bonjour Joffrey,
A fine portrait of a Grey Heron in breeding plumage. The sharpness, low POV, pose and almost full frame composition are excellent. Though the top of the head is alittle OE the light management against the natural dark BG is great.

Very good picture, almost like seeing the live bird! ... I think there is a slight excess of clarity in the front of the bird, but I would bet that this was seen in the time of shooting! .. very good job, all natural. Very good result at 1/100s. I like the frame.

This is really beautiful and striking indeed. The details captured on this Heron are sharp, well focused and presented beautifully. I just love the fluffy chest, the yellow eye and the feathers draped over its back. I always find it very interesting to look at its legs as it almost looks like an old man’s legs, all wrinkled. The fluff in its beak is eye-catching. Great composition of the bird standing in the water, and the water also forming part of the back drop. Beautiful work. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.
