Orchis militaris L.
Family: Orchidaceae
Common names : Military Orchid (EN), Orchis guerrier, Orchis militaire, Orchis casqué (FR), Orchide militare (IT), Helm-Knabenkraut (GE), Soldaatje (DU), Johannesnycklar (SW), Storczyk kukawka (PO), Ятры́шник шлемоно́сный (RU)

The military Orchid is usually quite robust, 20-45 cm tall, with four to five broad, shiny basal leaves with marked parallel veins, and one or two sheathing stem leaves. The bracts are small and pinkish. Most plants have about 30 flowers. The sepals and upper petals form a long, pointed hood. This is pale on the outside, and lilac-rose on the inner surface marked with parallel lines of mauve or dark green. The pinkish lip is long, with tufts of mauve-coloured hairs forming lines of spots down the middle - the 'buttons on the soldier's tunic'. The two side lobes, tinged pinkish-mauve, are long and narrow, curving outwards and forwards. The main body of the lip is divided into two square-cut lobes, sometimes with a median tooth. The spur is pink, rounded and down-curved. There is great variation in lip shape and markings. The flowers have a vanilla scent.

It is well distributed around Europe, reaching as far north as southern Sweden, but rather rare in the Mediterranean areas. It is extremely rare in Britain and a protected species, occurring only at the Rex Graham nature reserve in Suffolk and the Buckinghamshire Chilterns. Those sites are protected, managed and carefully monitored to prevent habitat destruction and ill-intentioned collection. Slug damage is a continual hazard.

Bonsoir Catherine,
Quelle belle photo.

Hi Catherine.

Here, there is an orchid like this which called as Maymun orkidesi (Monkey Orchid). You captured it with a very nice POV. I like sharpen details. I heard before that it is called as Büyük Salep Otu in Turkish. But this is no a common name. If we translate it must be "Asker Salebi" or "askeri salep" (Orchis=Salep, militaris=Askeri).
Bravo and TFS.
Greetings & have a nice weekend

Hello Catherine,
Very sharp details and lovely colours. It is a wonderful image with a beautiful flower.
I like the contrast between the green blurred BG and the pink flower.
Have a nice weekend!

Hi Catherine,
this flower is so interesting with all the little "hairs" on it.
I love the colour, just wonderful.
Thanks, it's beautiful.
Enjoy the weekend

Hello Catherine
fine details and wonderful vivid colors for a delicate "Orchidea" (in italian) perfectly in focusing and optimally contrasting with green BG tonalities. Have a nice week-end

Hello Catherine,
A superb close-up of O. militaris flower, that we call Johannesnycklar in Swedish.
The POV, sharpness and colours show the features superbly.
The small clumps of purple 'hairs' remind me of Chinese calligraphy.
Thanks and have a good week,

Ciao Catherine. An handsome coloured detailed flower in good DOF and contrats against the green BG.

Bonjour Catherine,
Splandide macro très finement détaillée et très délicatement colorée.
A bientôt sur TN pour de nouvelles aventures.
