[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Nuctenea umbratica or "She who likes the shadows of night" (poetic translation) is a good descriptive name for this araneidae spider. It's only well after sunset that you have a chance to see it, weaving its orb web or waiting for a prey. As soon as light falls upon it, it retreats in the tiny crevice where it spends the day.
This one (a female) is missing a leg, but you can see (posterior left, at the right of the image) one of them raised to contact the telegraph wire that connects it to its web.
It was 11:00 pm and 1 degree centigrade when the picture was shot.
The colour pattern of this species is rather variable, some specimens being jet-black all over, and some much paler than this one.
The head-down pose is the right one, btw, even though you might think that head-up is more photogenic ;°)

Hi Philippe. This is great. I have loads of these in the garden, I have tried and tried to get a nice shot - especially of the head but have never had great results due to their nocturnal habits. There is a particulary big one outside my backdoor and I'm pleased to see that tonight (with the warmer temps) she and the others are back. Excellent shot. Thanks for posting.

I will try and get a picture of the underside to get those lovely yellow spots. :-)

Great macro shot!
Good job Philippe. I hope to write notes like you!
Bye

I like spiders. This is nice, but the sharpness is not so good and the light disturb me on the back of the spider.
