Nicrophorus vespillo
Family: Silphidae

This beetle is about 3cm long and can be seen from April to October. Like other Silphidae, known as Sexton beetles or burying beetles, it feeds on decaying animals. They get their name from the practice of digging a hole beneath a dead animal and then pulling the body down into the hole. Sexton beetles usually work in pairs, and afterwards the female will lay her eggs next to the corpse for her young to feed on when they hatch.
Its wing casings are brightly marked with two wavy orange bands, and also the antennae have bright orange bobbles on the ends. (UK Safari)

About the shot: The DOF is not very good and the sharpness not perfect, but I met this species for the first time and I found it interesting. Did you notice the two parasites on it?

Hi Catherine

Great capture, I like the POV and pose of teh beetle, DOF is fine here in my opinion.

Chris

Bonsoir Catherine.

Félicitations pour cette prise de vue, pour le moins originale, de ce coléoptère dans une position acrobatique. Splendide netteté de la tête et des antennes, toutes déployées et occupées à capter les odeurs.

Bravo.

A bientôt.

Philippe

Hi Catherine. This a first class macro of the Beetle. The detail is spot on. With sharp focusing. .Your use of the light has given rich colours. I like the pose on the single stem of grass. well done TFS.
Nick..
