[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
These large and broad hoverflies are encountered in deciduous forests and their edges, where the males hover at several meters height. V. zonaria is associated with urban regions in the Netherlands, with many sightings on Budleja in gardens. It is a strongly migratory species, which probably yearly establishes populations north of the range where it is able to hibernate. V. elegans is an Iberic and Corsican species and can be abundant in mediterranean oak forests. Adults of Volucella forage on umbelliferae and several flowering scrubs (e.g. Crataegus, Ligustrum). They are also detected sunning on leaves.
The larvae live in nests of bumble bees and social wasps, where they are detritivores and larval predators. The exception is probably V. inflata, whose larvae appear to be inhabitants of insect-workings in which sap and insect faeces/tree humus provide a sub-aqueous mix (Speight, 2000).

Recognition

Volucella contains large, broad bodied hoverflies. The face is extended downwards. The arista is densely feathered.
=============
Gert posted one off the same specie today..this one also was very big at least 3cm , could be 4 cm .. the flowers are 3mm big so this is a measure for size..turned the pic 180° for better view..

Nice pciture Leon, I don't know if this is the same fly as Gert's but this one looks to me like Volucella zonaria - they can have a wingspan of up to 45 mm!

You did well in the circumstances, with the fly being in the shade and the white flowers in the sun. Nicecomposition.

It is strange to see these 4cm flies. Very interesting. The compo is good in the photo. A bit dark on top of thorax, but still a nice capture. Thanx for sharing.

Leon
I like the pose here, and the overexposed white flowers below it makes it appearlike it is floating on air, a nice affect.
