Xylena exsoleta (Linnaeus, 1758) - Sword-grass moth
Subfamily Cuculinae
Family: Noctuidae

This moth is quite common in Europe and it has very variable and beautifully coloured caterpillars that live on a number of plants (Rumex, Sambucus, Euphorbia, Iris, Myrica, Silene, Ononis, Geranium, Stachys, Serratula, Sedum, Petasites and other low-growing plants).

This one was shot during a very rainy morning high (ca 2000 m asl) in the Pirin Mountains, near Vihren hut.

PS. For those of you that would like to know how the imago looks like - please check the website:

But.... it's not so pretty as the larva :-)

This is super trippy!
I just love the colours and patterns.
What a clear shot too.
Who needs acid when there are creatures like this around?
Great capture.

Love the colors and patterns on this one. The green is particularly pretty. A very clear shot with very sharp details. Do you have a picture of the adult moth? Well done and TFS. : )

Hi Michal, what a lovely image, sharp, good colours, wonderful shape and light. I think I'll have to go find out what the adult moth looks like now :)

Ekstra fotka.

Very interesting shot, unique POV.
Love the colours.
Good shot.

Really exciting colours. I'm fond of bright and unusual colours and patterns found in nature. I think this could be even more tightly cropped to get rid of more of the boring background. Then I would crop it even further and make an abstract from the colours of the caterpiller itself and put it on TrekLens.

This is really a cool shot! colors are very nice and I like the POV. Something about that 6 shape always gets me everytime. Paul :)

What beautiful colours!
Congratulation, this is a real beautiful insect!
Bye Tom
