Hello my Friends!
Today continuation of bat photos, but this time picture of specimen which was an active one - photographed last summer in Devataska Pestera (Devil's Cave) 20km SE from Lovech.

First of all I would like to dedicate this picture to all of you who tried to guess a name of bat species from my last presentation. Really there was no winner, but here are "almost-winners" - Friends who correctly guessed name of the genus name: James, Umit, Dietrich, Ivan, and Ulla .

Thanks to kind help by Ahmet (rousettus) and Ivan (Argus) the species ID was possible - this is Rhinolophus hipposideros. Another picture of the some species was presented by me here.

I wrote many different things about bats as a very unique group of mammals, from legends about them to their ecology. To do not repeat these data, and also according to pose of specimen from present picture, this time I would like to give an answer for the question:

why do bats hang up side down?

I have to confess that it was not easy for me to find information about this strange behaviour, but here are details which look good to explain it...

As you know bats have ability to hibernate (or to spend some time in torpor). As a result of cold weather, and lack of food the bat can "go to sleep" in the cold period of year. But when the bat is in torpor, it must use as little energy as possible, to maximize the use of its body fat for surviving through the winter. It can't waste energy using muscles because it will not survive cold weather.

Over time, the bat has developed a special kind of foot joint that lets it lock its foot in a tightly clasped position, with the weight of the body keeping the foot locked. By hanging from a safe and secure perch, and locking this joint, the bat can drift off into a torpor without worry of falling. Since bat does not need to use any muscle to hold its grip it can hibernate for as long as its body fats can sustain it...

And of course bats are great acrobats not only because they can hang up side down, but also as the flyers - in the air. But this is another story for another bat presentation... ;>

And for the end - a short joke of Polish chiropterologists for which - I believe - here it is a good time and place :>

In the cave... Three bats are hanging up side down under the ceiling. Suddenly one of them "rotates" its body 180 degrees. The second bat asks the third one:
- What was happened with him???
- I do not know! - the third is answering - Probably he... fainted!!!
;>

All the best for all bat lovers!!! :>

Hello Radomir !
I love to see bats on TN, specially when it is such a good picture. Amazing sharp details, excellent use of the flash, splendid composition and POV, and I also like the ur on the bat - it looks so soft I just want to stretch my hand and touch it ! :-) The black BG makes it stand out very nicely. Very well done !
Valerie.

The location of the image taken and what it is....it at least demands a certain amount of respect both in science and a tad of mythology. Well seen and noted Radomir..

Hello Jaskula,
This is a perfect shot of a bat showing the hanging up side town from the ceiling. TFS. Regards,

Hi Radomir,
This is a very nice shot of this Rhinolophus! I like the details and the fact that the flash gave natural colors and sharpness.
Thanks

This is a really cool photo both in subject and quality. The sharpness and the effect of the flash is perfect. The pose is wonderful. I love the simplicity of the composition with the neutral colors and the touches of pink.

I am bat lover:-) I think I could get your best wishes upon me:). This an another perfect bat capture of your excelent photography as usual my friend. By the way, I noticed that the title imposing the etymology of the "acrobat" word:) stemning from the "hanging up side down" behaviour under the ceiling :p. Thanks for sharing this beauty my friend!

Very good lighting from your flash and great exposure.
Superb composition and POV.

A perfect specimen captured quite expertly, a good heading, more than adequate information on the upside-down stand and a fine joke in the end. What can one ask more of a friend?
Thanks and cheers my friend!

very well done.

Very amusing pun caption to this lively image of a bat, Radomir. I like it!
The "acrobatic" Bat looks handsome when you find its face within the legs of a large 'M' letter.
Great capture once again.

Radomir, Superb shot and such an excellent quality. Lovely view and just superb composition. Ganesh

hello Radomir,
When I returned, I also found your great captures of bats. This is excellent macro for Rhinolophus hipposideros. You are right. As you remember, I wrote your former shot of same species. Horseshoe bats can be identified their nose leaves: horseshow, sella and lancet. We also use finger ratios, especially ones of fourt finger segments on wing. For the Lesser, laterally, upper part of sella round and lower part extend to front. Lancet is almost exact triange. I think these are enough for identification. On the contrary some members may be say not scientific page, this is TN:)
greeting and thanks for this great capture and information. best wishes
Ahmet

Hi Radek

How are you, my friend? I hope you are well. Any news from your paper?

I'm afraid it's again really cold here, too :(( But it's not really snowing like in Poland. However, i'm sure that all these strange chances affect nature...and not in he good way :(

I was rather busy these days and haven't had any TN time lately. I see you've posted some bats now...very interesting subjects. Here is something you might not have known: my middle name is Vlad and i was born in the north-western part of Romania - a place that used to be known as Transylvania :)))

This is a very nice picture and presentation from you, my friend!
I really like the very good close-up here and the impeccable sharpness that you present it with.
The use of flash is very good and brigs just enough light on it, the DOF is spot-on and the composition is very nice as well.
We have that same joke about bats here, too, but i was nice to remind it again :)

Thank you for you very kind words on my photo, take care and all the best!
Horia

Hi Radomir,

Hello Radomir,
I thought you were a Beetleman and not a Caveman! :-) I think your collection of bat images is most impressive! This one is really outstanding in its hanging pose. Excellent sharp details and fine colours against the darkness of the cave. Very well done!
Many thanks for your kind dedication too!
Best wishes, Ulla

Hi Radomir,
The quality of the image is very good.
Usually these animals are located at far distances, but you managed to get a very clear image of the bat.
Also the pose got is very representative of the species.
Congratulations and thanks for share.

Pozdrawiam
Ania

Great shot!! Reminds me of batman. The way the wings are folded in a cross looks good. Also the name of the cave is interesting, Devil's Cave :) . And very useful note.
