For the New Year I present you another shot from Melnik, one of the most interesting nature places in Bulgaria...

Palpares libelluloides (Linnaeus, 1764)
Family: Myrmeleonidae - Ant-Lions
Order: Neuroptera - Lacewings

This remarkable insect is the largest species of European lacewings. Its wingspan reaches 10cm! It flies during a day, from May to September, occuring in rough grasslands, dunes and rocky maquis of Mediterranean area. Larva lives in soil and debris and contrary to other ant-lions makes no pit. Its head just protrudes from soil and larva rushes out to grasp passing prey in huge jaws.

Hi Michal,
This has superb detail! The exposure looks to be right on the money. The light in this was really great. Beautiful colors. Flawless composition and framing. Very interesting, and very well done.

Happy new Year Michal!
Very fine portrait of this insect. You got some interesting looking insects in your photo collection. Many of them I didn't know to exist in Europe.
Anyway, to photograph them, one must know them well: where they live, what they do, where they hide...
It's very clear to me that you are a pro regarding the insects.
Have a great 2006.
Regards, Petru

Hi Michal. This is a striking picture. I've never seen a lacewing like this before. Great job on the sharpness and great compromise on getting the insect within the DOf and the BG out. It is beautifully sharp and well composed. Great notes too. Well done :)

Witaj Michal!
Thank you for this remarkable capture of gigabntic flying ant from Melnik!

It is a good coincidence that this is your last year's New year congratulation to TN (I was not a member of this wonderful society art that time) and wish you all the best during this new 2007!

Dear Michal,
I tried Palpares myself and I found out how much better your (older) picture is. Interesting: the pale sun becomes this uncoloured animal very well, I learned something from this.
My compliments.
