An adult Barnacle Goose at Yyteri mudflats in the West coast of Finland.

From Birdguides:

Barnacle Goose (Branta leucopsis)

In: Barnacle Goose Ca: Oca de galta blanca Da: Bramgås De: Weißwangengans Es: Barnacla cariblanca Fi: valkoposkihanhi Fr: Bernache nonnette It: Oca facciabianca Nl: Brandgans No: Hvitkinngås Pt: Ganso-de-faces-brancas Sv: Vitkindad gås US: Barnacle Goose Ru: Белощекая казарка

It is smaller than the Canada Goose with more silvery grey wings and mantle. It looks as though it has pulled a big black stocking over its head and neck but its white face has poked through the toes.

Winters on coastal grassland pastures and marshes. Breeds on islands in the Baltic.

Like many Arctic birds, their nests are vulnerable to Arctic Foxes so they often nest as close as possible to pairs of Gyr Falcons which help to keep the foxes away.

The Greenland population migrates first to Iceland before continuing to winter on the Hebrides, with smaller numbers in Ireland. The Svalbard birds move firstly to coastal Norway, before crossing the North Sea, to winter on the Solway Firth. The wintering population in Holland breeds in Arctic Russia and the Baltic.

Hello Pekka,
The Barnacle goose is similar to the Canada goose.
Strange way to wear stockings though..:-)

Hi Pekka,

This goose looks so stately walking along in the water. I loved the description in your notes - the black "stocking" and the white face are beautiful. Excellent shadings and details in the plummage and wings. Looks wonderful in the natural setting.

Hello Pekka,
This composition is great Pekka, the contrast of the black and white plumage is difficult but you have done a super job. Thanks for sharing.
