A Red-necked Grebe at Otajärvi (lake) in South-West Finland. This old picture was shot from small rowing boat.

Red-necked Grebe (Podiceps grisegena)

In: Red-necked Grebe Ca: Cabussó gris Da: Gråstrubet Lappedykker De: Rothalstaucher Es: Somormujo cuellirrojo Fi: härkälintu Fr: Grèbe jougris It: Svasso collorosso Nl: Roodhalsfuut No: Gråstrupedykker Pt: Mergulhão-de-pescoço-ruivo Sv: Gråhakedopping US: Red-necked Grebe Ru: Серощекая поганка

It most closely resembles the Great Crested Grebe but is slightly smaller and stockier with a thicker, invariably darker neck and showing some yellow rather than pink in the bill. Young birds may still have the head stripes of their juvenile plumage but the dark crown characteristically extends to below eye level. In a Great Crested Grebe the dark eye would stand out against a pale background. In summer plumage they have a neat pale grey face patch contrasting with the dark red colour of the neck and black crown.

Breeds on well-vegetated freshwater bodies. Winters on coasts and estuaries but is infrequent inland.

European breeding birds migrate to North Sea, Baltic and Atlantic coasts, returning to breeding waters from early March.

I like the way you played with the depth of field here and the colours are demanding on the eye...It is a complex image but of good quality!

Ciao Pekka, lovely couple with splendid colors and superb focus, very well done, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you, ciao Silvio

Hi Pekka
Although the detail on the birds is not strong this is still a good picture. I think it gives a real sense of the habitat they are in. The light and colours on the choppy water are particularly effective.
Kind Regards

hello Pekka

excellent shot of the Red-necked Grebe

Hello Pekka,
what an outstandind capture.
Great colours.
Health, Love and Joy

I like the sense of movement in this picture, Pekka. The Grebes are swimming half immersed in water and enjoying the activity.
The POV from the boat alongside the birds shows the one in the foreground with good clarity.
Well done and TFS.

Hello Pekka,
You did well to capture this pair of Red-necked Grebes from a boat using a 1.4 teleconverter on a 300 zoom to get such a good result. The front one is sharp and well seen. The choppy water with blue sky reflection makes a striking BG.
TFS this one,
All the best,

Hi Pekka,
a good shot of this Red-necked Grebe which shows it's habitat well.
Sharp and crisp.
Great DOF.
The colours are a little on the blue side but that can easily be fixed. It might just be my laptop's screen though... I think it needs calibrating!

I hope you had a great Christmas!
