Most people are afraid of bats, but I love them ! When I was a child I spent many time in my grand-parent's house, where there are lots and lots of bats. Now I am an adult and I work, but I like to go there and to watch these beautiful animals. They sleep under the roof, during the day, but as soon as the sun disappears at the horizon, they come out to catch insects. They are so graceful and so agile when they fly around.

I would say that they belong to the species Common Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pipistrells), but I'm probably wrong ang if anyone could help with ID I would appreciate it.

I also posted a WS, to see the bats from another angle.

The picture is not as sunny or colorful as a butterfly, but I think it is interesting enought to be posted. It was also quite difficult to take this picture, as it was completely dark and I had to stand just under the roof, half standing and half on my knees, which was very incomfortable with my leg who is still hurting a little. I hope you'll like the photo as it is, with all the imperfections.

Hi Valerie,
They are fascinating animals. I just recently was able to take a photo of one. It was located just next to my house. It was hanging on a wall where one not expect to see it. It actually stayed there the entire night and even the next day. My neighbour called animal control, because it seemed that the bat was not healty enough to fly and eat.
To see that many and all paired up this may is magnificent. It looks like the got the perfect place to sleep. Your effort of capturing did pay off. I hope the smell wasn't too bad either.
TFS,
Niek

Hola Valerie,

amicalement,
Pat

Hello Valerie,
Ahhh, so you have your own colony of bats!
This capture is a bit funny too, since this is animal behaviour we don't see every day...
I remember when I was a kid there were lots of bats out during dark autumn evenings, but nowadays I hardly see any at all...
Image has fine details and shows well their daytime behaviour!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hello Valérie,
Excellent capture of a fine gathering of Pipistrelles, a scene that not many of us have the priviledge to see. Both this and the shot in your WS are of fine technical qualties with good lighting, colour and sharpness and taken from a very suitable POV.
Nice to see!
TFS,
Ivan

Hi Valerie,

I have never seen more than one bat at a time so I found this picture fascinating. Not sure that I would have been so brave. You captured the group very well with great detail. That really is quite a sight. TFS.

Hola Valerie,
realmente original,
detalles magníficos,
sensacional Workshop.
buen flash,
saludos

This is a very interesting shot Valerie. You managed a lot of sharpness and detail. It is hard to tell just what they are hanging onto. You might experiment with adjusting the flash a bit so it is not quite so bright.

Valerie,
As a child I played with them. We had a lot of them in Goa where I was born.We also have them in Terceira, Azores. They kill all sorts of pests plus help reproduction of fruits etc:etc:etc.
Very useful creature; in fact, our world, as we know it, would not exsit if it were not for the bats. BELIEVE me, it is true.
Great photography work; excellent one in W/S too.
Mario.

Hi Valerie,
A beautiful capture of this little bats in a group. Very nice details and POV. Both the OV and WSV are good. Sorry I don't know the ID but some sort of fruit bats I think. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hello Valerie,
It is a long time since I saw on TN a bat picture :) And it is really nice that you decided to show us these amazing and still poorly known creatures :)
I like that this is a colony (I believe a breeding colony) of Common Pipistrelle. It is nice to see these bats in their natural (or rather semi-natural) hhabitat. By the way, a small correction to the latin name. It should be Pipistrellus pipistrellus, there is a lack of one word in the species name :)
By the way, I added this picture to 2 themes: bats, and bats of Europe. I hope you will agree for that :)
TFS and have a nice afternoon,
Radomir

Saludos Valerie.

Hi Valerie,
I also find bats to be amazing creatures. As a kid I loved going to various street lights at night to observe the bats, Luna Moths and Rhinocerous Beetles...It has become more and more common to see bat houses(small wooden boxes nailed to trees for the bats to roost in) as people find that they help control mosquitos...The biggest fear of bats now comes from the fact that many are infected with rabies...In Austin, Texas there is a bridge where people go to watch as thousands of bats swirl into the sky at dusk...It is an amzing sight...Anyway, a great group capture...Nice detail, color, POV and composition...Well done...

Hola Valerie,

Hello Valerie,
fascinating document from out of the dark - and so many of these bats, very clearly pictured. Love those pink faces and fluffy furs! You love to take us out to little adventure trips.
Your picture made me remember that some time ago in the morning I found a bat lying helplessly on its back in the grass in the yard of our university - incessantly screaming in a very shrill, almost imperceptible voice, while some crows were watching it a sort of malign interest that made chase them away.
When I carefully lifted the bat from the ground, it cuddled at once into my open hand, seemingly relaxed. That bat felt so impressingly light weight, like a feather, while I carried it to some kind of shelter.
Thank you! My best regards,
Peter

bonjour valerie

Hi Valerie
I think bats are wonderful too. They eat lots of different bugs and especially mosquitoes. I don't have bats right here in Cochrane, but drive an hour or so east and they have lots. Bats play in important roll in nature and I wish there were more of them.

Nice capture of this group of tiny bats. They look so cozy huddled altogether. Well done.

Hi Valerie,
Love this, wish I could fine me some bats :(
And row after row no less! Great DOF, detail color, and exposure. I agree, fascinating animals!

Ciao valerie,
