Arctia caja

Dutch name: Grote beer
French name: Ecaille martre

This moth has a wingspan of 45 to 65 mm. The design of the wings varies: the front wings are brown with a white pattern (which can however be missing), the back wings orange with a pattern of black dots. The conspicuous patterns serve as a warning to predators, because the moth's body fluids are poisonous.

The moth is nocturnal and can usually only be seen flying around a source of light. You can normally find these moths in June to August, in gardens, park, meadows, grasslands, and scrubby areas.

Hello Marie,

I like this photo in which you present so well this moth.
Nice contrast between the colors from the wings and the leaf beneath. Image is sharp rendering well the pattern of the wings and the heary body of the insect.

Hi Marie Christine,
Beautiful shot of the moth, awesome color contrast, good sharpness, nice details. This specie was frequent here in Hungary (its local name is 'Common Bear Butterfly'), but unfortunately became quite rare in the last decade. Thanks for letting me see it.

Dear Marie,

Trust all is well with you.
What a fantastic looking moth you have here! I have a slightly greater interest in mothnthan butterflies because they 're more elusive i feel and also a bit challenging to photograph especially with P&S .Their colours and textures offer a certain amount of challenge.
This that you have is brillaintly done picking up all details and colours. The flash is perfect doing justice to its original colours.Very well done.
TFS & Cheers
