Orgya antiqua, caterpillar

Dutch name: Witvlakvlinder
French name: Orgye ou Etoilée

The vapourer moth is generally distributed and common in gardens and parks. The males fly from July to September and have dark orange wings with a large white spot on the forewings. The female is almost wingless and therefore remains on the cocoon from which she emerged. The caterpillars appear from April to May and are a greyish violet with red and yellow markings and four tufts of yellow hairs. The larvae feed on most dediduous trees.

This is a day-flying moth which can be - and is often - mistaken for a small brown butterfly.

Food : most deciduous trees and shrubs especially oak, lime and hawthorn.

Hi Marie. This is a unusual looking thing , I dont think i would pick this up if i was a bird. You have captured amazing detail with natural colours. well done TFS. good notes too.

A lovely shot, Mariki!I love the beautiful delicate details you've brought to light with this shot!

Hello Marie Christine, again,

the Orgya caterpillars are spectacular. On your picture I notice for the first time the strange black knobs. The background probably has to be clear and smooth to make the fine details stand out. Yet the painted surface makes the picture look artificial. Still, it was worth the try, thanks for presenting this incredible creature.

Best regards
