Now I want you to close your eyes and imagine - You're sitting in the cold light of a pale and timid winter sun, on a big rock, and in front of you there are the frozen shores of a lake. No noise at all, except the babbling of 30, maybe 40 ducks who are shining brown and metallic green in this beautiful light, over there, on the parts where the current is too strong for the ice to freeze the water ; they are swimming around, diving, feeding, and just looking at them gives you an intense feel of happiness. A majestic swan is swimming among them, all white and bright as a real prince. And then, on the frozen parts and on the shores, you have a whole family of coypus, just some meters away from you. The young ones play, the bigger ones are just eating, or swimming, or washing themsleves in funny poses. Sometimes, they make small squeking noises. Then you life your eyes to the branches above your head, and you see birds, many birds - blue tits, black tits, blackbirds, nuthatches, and many others whose names I do not even know. They fly all around you in a gracous ballet, stopping from time to time to feed on the seeds somebody has left for them. They are barely afraid of you,and sometimes they come so close you could almost touch them. You do not dare to move, not even to breath, for fear to beak all the magic of this moment. You have the feeling that nothing could be more perfect than this display of life and beayuty all around you...

This is what I felt this morning - I was sick and I needed some fresh air, so I went to "my" lake without much expectations, though. I sat down, and I had the feeling I had suddenly dropped in a fairy tale, with all these animals around me. I was all alone. Nobody to disturbe me. Nobody to interrupt the wonderful moments. And all these animals around me... Usually there are too many people there, but today I was alone with my camera, and it was PERFECT. I could have sat there all day long, enjoying the pale warmth of winter sun and all the animals who surounded me.

This summer, it will be even more interesting, when frogs and dragonflies and lizards and butterflies also come to live on the shores of this lake.Truly, I love this place - it's my little paradise on earth...

I have seen many pictures of Nuthatches on TN - many of them better than this one - but it's my first Nuthatch. I have been looking for this bird for quite some time, and I'm proud I finally managed to get a correct picture - and I wanted to share the pleasure I got from it with you, my friends who love nature as much as I do. I know you can fully understand what I felt when I pushed the button, and realized the picture was actually good - it's so thhrilling, specially after two years of waiting for a Nuthatch ! :-)

As so many things have already been written on this bird, on TN, it would be useless and boring th repeat it again, so there won't be a long note about Nuthatches here.

By the way, this is picture #1 from a series of 5. The others will follow in the next days.

Hello Valérie,
Sometimes we have the lick to take an unplanned good photo, which is what you did with this fine capture of a European Nuthatch.
The typical pose, the POV, sharpness, composition and lighting are all excellent. If it weren't for the OE tail this would be a near perfect image, but it is nice to view and thanks for sharing it!
Have a good weekend,
Best wishes,
Ivan

What a great and characteristic pose. Beautiful light and colours and very sharp. The POV and DOF are excellent, the composition perfect.
Have a good weekend,
Peter

Bonjour Valerie,
Bon week end.
Pierre

well done ! TFS,

Hi Valerie.
I have read your note with great interest. It is very nice and touching. And it is a fine story for your very cute shot. You managed to reflect this charming birdy at so attractive moment and pose. Sharpness and details. Exactness of colours are superb. And I like reproduction of the surroundings. Cold winter sunlight and winter clothes of the trees create and pleasant esthetic impression. My compliments and all the best. Sweet post.
Alexei.

Hallo Valerie,
ja ja, das ist die perfekte Pose dieses wunderbaren Vogels. Excellent getroffen, sehr sehr schön! Diesen Winter hatte ich noch keine Gelegenheit, einen zu fotografieren.
Also vielen Dank, sehr schön, Gruß
Sabine - wishnugaruda

If I were your English teacher, I would give you A+ for your compositional skills and double AA+ for your creativity, Valerie :).
On a serious note, your notes are always written very well.

You have used the ambient light very thoughtfully in this image of a Nuthatch. It gives the effect of three dimensionality to the cute little bird.
I also like the double catch-light in the bird's eye.
Overall, a well composed, crisp and beautiful image.
Thanks for sharing it and keep shooting.
Ram

Hello Valerie

A beautiful POV for this cute nuthatch.
The nuthatches around here have an interesting vocalization that I really enjoy hearing in the woods during Winter.
The focus is sharp with lovely detail.
Excellent colours.
Nicely composed int he frame.
