Anas platyrhynchos

Geographic Range

Mallards can be found almost anywhere in the world. They dominate the Northern Hemisphere, and can be found easly in Oceana, Asia, Africa, South America and many islands

Most often, they prefer wetlands, where highly productive waters produce large amounts of floating, emergent and submerged vegetation Wetlands also produce a great deal of aquatic invertebrates on which mallards feed.

Physical Description

The mallard is undoubtably the most recognized waterfowl in the world. The familiar duck morphology is complemented with a iridesent blue speculum on the wings in both sexes. On the male, the notable characteristics are the green iridesent plumage on the head and neck, and curled black feathers on the tail. The female's plumage is drab brown.Reproduction

Most mallard hens breed as yearlings, but they may not have much success; studies show that older hens have much lower duckling mortality than yearlings. Pair bonding starts as early as October and continues through March. Mallard males leave the hen soon after mating occurs. The hen usually lays 9 -13 eggs in a nest on the
ground near a body of water. When the ducklings hatch after 26-28 days, the hen leads them to water and does not return to the nest.

After the breeding season, mallards form flocks and migrate from northern lattitudes to warmer southern areas. There they wait and feed until the breeding season starts again. Some mallards, however, may choose to stay through the winter in areas where food and shelter are abundant; these mallards make up a resident populations.

The familiar "quack" of ducks is from the female mallard--it is named the "decrescendo call", and can be heard for miles. A female will give the call when she wants to bring other ducks to her, such as her ducklings, and as a result it is also known as the "hail call".

Food Habits

Mallards consume a wide variety of foods, including vegetation, insects, worms, gastropods and arthropods, although they are not restricted to these. They also take advantage of human food sources, such as gleaning grain from crops.

Hello Jacqueline, wonderful shot of this cute mother and baby malard with excellent composition and details.
TFS and regards,

Hallo Jacqueline
An absolute delightful image, not only for the cuteness factor but also for the brilliant details captured on the plumage of the adult mallard. The colours captured and portrayed are rich and warm and looking at this image fills me with happiness. The single flower in the foreground adds extra sparkle to this already special image.
Although the little one is still just fluff, the big black eye is very noticeable. Thanks for sharing these cute waterbirds.
Best regards

Hi Jacqueline,
this is a lovely and motherly shot. The ducks are very sharply taken with well used of light. The patterns on the feathers indeed very pretty. The hairs on the duckling too is very sharp and the contrast is well seen.
What a cute guy, following the mum in an elegant pose. You also have included the daisy, it enhance the shot and make the whole capture very meaningful.
Beautifully composed in brilliant environment.

Thanks and best regards,

This picture is almost one year old, Jacqueline. Apparently, you had started doing nature photography much earlier than you joined TN.
I can see that you have a good knack for perspective -- you have got three subjects within the frame. Though your focal point is the frontal view of the mom Duck, you have got the chick too in sharp focus and that little white and yellow daisy just about stays within the frame. I know you wouldn't crop it off :).
I also like the two distinct colours of the foreground and the background.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful picture and best regards.

likeable familial moment, the ambling of mother particular,
beautiful colors and pose

Excellent! Fine colours, excelllent sharpness!
have a nice weekend!

hi Jacqueline

We seldom see Mallards here in Borneo although many years ago as a boy migratory birds were very common; how I wish those days we had digital cameras!

I like the depth of this shot, giving both of them a good sharpness and especially showing different action. The mother always casting a watchful eye, as seen here. If the mother is placed slightly off center, the duckling may get more prominence?

I can see you are doing well here as we started just days apart. As Jusni would have attested, I have no macro lens yet.

Keep post your good work.

tfs, bill

Hi Jacqueline

Firstly, thanks for visiting my flying Impalas.
I've gone back into your portfolio and I really like this shot. The waggling mother
Mallard, the cute little duckling, and the tiny flower in the foreground are all items
that gave the shot a lovely interest. The DOF was sufficient to capture good details
on both birds and the colours are natural.

Well done and TFS.

Hello Jacqueline,

They are so cute and funny, when they instinctively follow mama..!
The fine light renders great colours, and both birds are captured with great details...
The image has a lovely spring feeling, you even managed to include a daisy..!
