[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Oreina speciosa is a rather large leaf-beetle (family chrysomelidae)found only in montainous regions.
The bright colors are supposed to be a signal to potential predators, warning them that the insect is toxic or at least unpalatable.
Interestingly, the toxic substances are not synthesitized by the beetle itself, but come from the host plant : the insect just stores them in its body. This mean that the protection depends on the level of toxins in the plant itself, which is variable from plant to plant and from location to location.
In the same population, some specimens can also have a quite different color (deep blue all over, for instance).

Bonjour Philippe,

Impressive macro capture of the large-leaf beetle! The clarity is beyond imagination and the sharpness and POV are their best. The metallic colors of the beetle are just awesome, giving great contrast to the comparatively rich-green colored leaf.
The note is very informative indeed.

Great composition overall!

thanks and greetings,
Paras Bhalla

Bonjour Philippe,
Anne

Bonjour Philippe,
you nicely reproduced the colours of the beetle which is not an easy task dependent on the
light and the viewing angle. Sharpness of the surface structures is excellent.
Depth of field could be a bit higher so that at least the eyes would appear sharper.
Best wishes, Peter

Salut Philippe,
Surperbe photo macro de ce joli coléoptère: pas facile de capter ces couleurs métalliques. Bravo,
Catherine

Muy bien plasmados los colores. Ligerísimamente justa de profundidad. Las texturas se aprecian claramente.
