Brief description of the bird
This bird, very common, is among land birds at general meaning: strict land birds and coastal birds. It is not part of the group of sea birds (the natatores). The plumage is black and white. The wings and neck are black. The lower part of the bird as well as the front of the neck are white. Frequently, the top of the head is black. Note the frequent presence of a small tuft of feathers ruffled on the top of the skull, as can be seen on the picture. The face is white and carries a long thin and straight beak (sometimes slightly curved) in black. Slightly marked sexual dimorphism, mostly male more bold colors. The legs are usually dark red color to pink. They are very long.
Ecology and biology
The bird is subservient to the coastal lagoons, swamps and flooded fields (rice), as well in fresh water as in brackish water. Any point of standing water near the coast suits him. The Black-winged stilt feeds in shallow water and on the surface in most cases, as can be seen on the presented cliché. Aquatic insects, worms, larvae and various small aquatic invertebrates make up its diet.
Extension area
The black-winged stilt can be observed around the Mediterranean and Asia Minor. In France, his favourite area is the Camargue and the Languedoc. Occasionally, it can occur on coastal Atlantic and English Channel. Sometimes present in the Dombes (in the interior). IUCN conservation status is "least concern". In the cold period in Europe, the bird migrates south, tropical Africa.
