A few informations on the colours of the bird

The bird, here presented, is a juvenile pink flamingo. Unlike adult birds, the plumage of young Flemish pinks is brown in color (very young) and turns to white with darker features and wings whose end is dark (to black).

It would seem that the pink flamingo is not capable by itself of producing the pigments giving it its characteristic coloring. It seems that the color of its plumage originated in its diet, including, among others, a pink shrimp (Artemia salina) that lives in the waters of lagoons and brackish ponds. Thanks to its special beak with a filter, the flamingo captures the small crustacean and, by accumulation effect, acquires the color from its prey whose pigments migrate towards the plumage of the pink flamingo predator. The accumulation effect requiring a certain time, this would explain the gradual and slow variation of color.

As for the pink color of the shrimps, it also seems to originate from their diet comprising unicellular algae including Dunaliella salina. This alga is capable of synthesizing carotenoid pigments by photosynthesis. The synthesis of carotenoids by this alga is a measure of protection against an excess of insolation: the carotenoids seem to limit the effects of the sun on the chlorophyll of this alga, which, at the end and paradoxically, is a green alga; It is a strategy of protection against radiation, quite common in green algae. This synthesis of beta carotene is also a strategy of adaptation to hyper-saline environments that are the lagoons in which live Dunaliella salina (the presence of abundant droplets of beta carotene in the cytoplasm of the algae increases its osmotic pressure and avoids the massive toxic entries of sodium chlorine in algae).

Note the extraordinary energy potential of Dunaliella salina , sometimes presented as one of the future bio-energies of humanity.

Hello Phillippe,
I never would have guessed that a juvenile Pink Flamingo would look like this, what a surprise. A great shot even under such harsh lighting. Nicely detailed and captured in a typical flamingo pose.

Hi Philippe
Very Interesting. Even in Lake Nakuru in Kenya ( with the millions of migrating Pink Flamingos), I have not come across the juvenile ones (or I did not look for one). Next time , I will look for them. Beautiful photo and thanks a lot for sharing this.

nice capture, nice background, no need for the frame, TFS Ori

Hello Phillippe,
Beautiful photo of this flamingo. Excellent sharpness and natural colors. Fine contrasting background.

Hello Philippe,
I haven't seen pink Flamingo yet. Quite well captured this juvenile one. I like exposure on shadow area. Bill, neck, head and a few portion of body got over exposed due to harsh light. But well POV and it would have been more attractive if you don't use frame, in my humble opinion.
Thanks forcsharubg,
