Brief description

The duck here presented is a male in breeding season: his head is vivid green accentuated (bottle's green) followed by a narrow white collar (barely perceptible on the plate) on a reddish brown chest and a brown lilac abdomen. The eye's rim is only slightly marked. The beak is mat yellow with a terminal black spot. Its shape is characteristic (in "duck bill"), adapted to its way of eating. The legs are red-orange. They are spreaded from each other. Their morphology explains the terrestrial movement of duck (as well from the Anatidae): the body of the duck moves at every step on the leg remaining in contact with the ground and maintains a stability of the duck by positioning the gravity center in proper place. The gait thus obtained is the characteristic waddle of these birds. Spaces between the fingers are palmed and are adapted to move on water and on muddy soils.

Hello Philippe,
A wonderful shot of this drake mallard. Rich colors, fine detail and perfectly exposed. The only way you could have captured it any better would be if there was some catchlight in its eye. Well done!!

Hi Phillippe
Lovely photo.
