Oberthür's Grizzled Skipper, Pyrgus armoricanus seems to be another new species for TN.

Among the European Hesperiidae, the various "Grizzled Skippers" can be very difficult to identify to species level, and markings, flight time and geography often have to be considered together.

RANGE. From NW. Africa (Morocco, Algeria) across S. Europe and Asia Minor to Iran and Lebanon.

DISTRIBUTION AND VARIATION. Varies in size of the spots on the wings' upper surface and in coloration of underside hindwing.

HABITATS AND BIOLOGY. Dry open grassy habitats, dry slopes up to 2,000m asl. Flight periods: May-June and July-September in two generations; in the south, the number of generations can be greater and the flight period can last from February to October . Host plants in Europe: Rosaceae [Fragaria vesca, Potentilla gelida, P. pedata, P. reptans , etc.). Larvae hibernate and pupate in the plant's basal leaves which are tied together with silk.

Very small, drably coloured, and very active, this was a difficult species to photograph - I have a fine collection of blurred shots! Not the biggest or most colourful of butterflies, but interesting nevertheless.

Suberb photo Nigel!
Perfect on everything!
Photo above scale!

superb picture! Very good in its details, very well set off from the background. Dynamic composition.
Thank you for the excellent note, too. Restless flyer, hard to catch. Thank you for sharing!
Best regards,

Very good detail, color, light, DOF & sharpness Nigel. Well composed and a perfect POV. Nicely contrasting OOF BG also. The NI hit the lower abdomen slightly with some loss of detail there, but a minor nit. Very well done.
Thank You!

Hi Nigel
Very sharp shot and well exposed. I like the position of the butterfly and colours of the BG which help contrast it. Pity the bottom of the flower is slightly cut off.

Hi Nigel,
it's such a pretty little butterfly, I like it.
Excellent sharpness, very well done, thanks

Hi Nigel,

Excellent composed picture. Good sharpness and exposure.
