[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Hipparchia fidia (Nymphalidae, Satyrinae) - the striped grayling - is found in south-west Europe and the north African Maghreb. It prefers hot places with short vegetation, some scatterd bushes and single trees. Resting on lime stone or on the bark of trees it is hardly visible when the wings are closed - and this is generally the case when not in flight. The grey-brown marbled coloration of the wings' underside is a good protection, not to be discovered by birds and possible picture hunters (notice the congruence of stone and parts of the wing coloration). You have to observe them in flight, then noticing where they settle down and cautiously sneak up. Arriving at the prospective landing place, it is often difficult to detect them.
This picture has been shot in southern France (Vaucluse) in the vicinity of Lioux, a small village at the edge of the 'Gorge de Veroncle'.
In addition to the lens, an Olympus auto-extension tube was used. Due to the bright sun, a flash was not necessary.

What a nice and interesting butterfly that you have well captured ! Last year I saw the same and also on grey rock in mountain... I also appreciate the complementary note. Congratulations Peter and thanks for sharing

You've find very interesting butterfly! I've never seen it.

Chris

Hi Peter
Great shot and excellent colors.
There is the true inviroment of this Hipparchia fidia where can easy hide.
The colors of the wings are like the rocks and the the trees so its a little difficult to shot this Nymphalidae but you did it
TFS

Hello Peter,
Interesting and nice photo, I like its composition and similar colours. But I think it needs a bit of treatment with WS. I´ll try with one tomorrow

Hernán

Hallo Peter,
gefeliciteerd met deze vondst! Mooie opname van deze mooie vlinder die in deze streek nog redelijk veel voorkomt evenals in Spanje, heeft echter verder in Europa geen grote verspreiding!(Wel in Noord-Afrika).
