European stag beetle: Lucanus cervus Distribution: Southern and central Europe. Habitat: Broad-leaved woodlands, especially oak, but also parks and gardens where there are hedgerows, tree stumps and logs. Size: Dark, violet-brown elytra (wing cases) with reddish-brown antlers (female's antlers are much smaller than the male's). Larva is creamy-white.Life-span: The larva lives 3-5 years. Adults live only between the months of May and August. Food: Larva eats rotting wood and roots. It is thought that the adult either eats tree sap or nothing at all. The male is easily recognised because of his mouthparts which have evolved into enormous jaws, resembling the antlers on a stag's head. Despite their fearsome appearance, these antlers are useless for biting, and are used to fight other males. It is the smaller female we need to be wary of - her tiny antlers may look less threatening but they can inflict a sharp nip! Unfortunately, the stag beetle is now rare in Europe, mainly due to loss of suitable habitat.
The blue spot in the bottom right corner is a Delphinium flower. ISO 200.

excellently composed with a perfect timing,
good blurred details showing the motion.
terrific job & take care, thor.

Hi Didier,
A very impressive in flight shot on this Stag Beetle. I think you have mastered flying bugs very well. I hvae tried these with little success. Nice detail, and the wing blur is perfect for this shot.
Well done again!
Scott

Hi Didier,
Beautiful shot, firstly for the technical ability required to capture such an image, and secondly for the excellent framing, perfect DOF and beautiful light and shadow. Excellent.

Hi Didier
Was your camera mounted on a state-of-the-art super spy ware mechanism, fitted with an ultra sonic tracking, infra red measuring, and laser precision activated device?
You have done well to capture this beetle in flight and although there are quite a number of stag beetle photos on TN this seems to be the first one showing it in flight.
A great composition with good colour definition, fine details, a superb BG, and well handled exposure. You managed to capture the movement rather well, and it is apparent that the wings moved so fast that the 1/250 shutter speed was by far too slow to freeze it completely.
Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot
