Fire Bug: Pyrrhocoris apterus

Readily identifiable by its bright red colouring and its characteristic markings, this beautiful insect can be found on many kinds of vegetation. It often swarms on the ground, feeding on fallen seeds, especially in early spring, after hibernation. It has also been known to attack other insects.

Most individual adults are short-winged, though a few long-winged individuals may occur in any population. They occur in woodland margins and clearings, and grassy scrubby places, with bare ground and suitable hibernation sites.

They are widespread in southern and central Europe, but very rare in Britain.

This little bug was taken on a recently split fig fruit after heavy rains. The sun was obscured, however, light was enough to get a crisp focus.

PP work limited to slight crop, framing, resizing (for TN) and sharpening.

Hello Tim,
very good macro, nice DOF and very good sharpness on you subject. Colors, POV and details are wonderful. Looks like there is another one of these bugs in the BG.

Hi Tim,
I really like this photo. Interesting object.
Good composition and really nice color and expo.

Very crisp and sharp picture of this colourful bug, Tim. I too shot some bugs in India recently with similar markings on their backs. I must compare notes to see if it is the same species when I post them in the near future.
You have done well to keep the split fruit within the frame in justification of your caption.
Well done and TFS.

A Ordem Hemiptera tem sempre belas espécies. Esta é especialmente bonita. Great click, excellent colors. TFS and congratulations.

Hello Tim,
great Macro my friend, very nice colors, red, green, black, well done and TFS,

i like the rumour on the title Tim! Perhaps a little bit later it found out the way. Great sharpness and impressive red on the bug!
Thank you,

'Allo Tim!

What a marvelous mask on this Fire Bug! I think I came across another post where it was called a Seed Bug... Perhaps like the Coltsfoot / Son-before-father it goes by several common names. The key of course is the scientific name. For me this is just a beautiful bug! < aka Bute Bug > I like the presentation on the fig! Does it feed on those? Tfs, Jay

PS Sorry no WS! ;)

Olá Tim

Bela fotografia...ótima composição, gostei do desfocado deixando o inseto realçar detalhes interessantes e cores lindas...muito curioso, meus parabéns pelo trabalho!
Grande abraço
