Machimus atricapillus.

Species of dark brown measuring 14 to 18mm length. Its thorax and its abdomen are bronzed and the first carries two longitudinal black lines.
The Machimus kind includes a certain number of very similar species which are difficult to distinguish. M. atricapillus is especially recognizable with its large surmounted facial silk protuberance black and located below the antennas. The imagoes fly from July to September in various biotops of plain and mountain, meadows, edges of the forests, gardens.
They are often posed on the leafs, wood balls, awaiting the passage of a prey which they capture in flight. Disturbed, they generally return to their observation post. They slowly suck the internal liquids of their victim and often carry it (in flight) from one place to another. Also predatory, the larvae of white color live in the ground, spend the winter init and are transforming at the beginning of the summer.
Distribution: all Europe including the Caucasus; also exist on the Canary Islands.

This one had just captured a Meliscaeva cinctella (my precedent sending).

Slightly increased saturation, accentuation, and Neat Image for the noise.

Excellent shot Sebastien, poor hoverfly! Detail, DoF and composition are all top notch. You are consistently impressive.

La cuauté de la nature dans cette photo... Très bonne profoneur de champ et note hyper intéressante et appremment, contrairement à moi tu t'y connais en insectes...

Great shot. I can actually see the intestines of the fly, amazing. Very nice shot, great moment, nice note. Thanx for sharing.

Very nice picture Sebastien. It shows the brutality of the micro world very well. Spot on DOF and very good colours. Composition is perfect.
