Spring Snowflake (Leucojum vernum) and Summer Snowflake or Loddon Lily (Leucojum aestivum) are bulbous plants belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family. They are the only species currently classified in the genus Leucojum.
The snowflakes are native to central and southern Europe, from the Pyrenées to Romania and western Russia, but they have been introduced and have naturalized in many other areas, including the east coast of North America. They have narrow, strap-like, dark green leaves. The flowers are small and bell-shaped, white with a green (or occasionally yellow) spot at the end of each tepal. They have a slight fragrance.
Leucojum vernum (Spring snowflake) normally grows 15-20 cm tall (6-8 in), though it may reach up to 35 cm (14 in). It flowers one or two weeks later than the snowdrops, i.e., from mid-February to March, as soon as the snow melts in its wild habitat.
Two varieties are known: L. vernum var. vernum with green spots on its tepals, and L. vernum var. carpathicum, which originates from the eastern part of its natural range, a larger plant with yellowish spots on its tepals; 'vagneri' from Hungary is a robust variant of var. vernum, often with two flowers per stem.

Die Frühlings-Knotenblume (Leucojum vernum), auch Märzenbecher, Märzbecher oder Großes Schneeglöckchen genannt, ist eine Pflanzenart aus der Familie der Amaryllisgewächse (Amaryllidaceae). Es ist eine der beiden noch in der Gattung Leucojum verbliebenen Arten; die zweite Art ist die leicht zu unterscheidende Sommer-Knotenblume (Leucojum aestivum). Der Gattungsname leitet sich vom Griechischen leukos = weiß, ion = Veilchen (der Geruch ist veilchenartig) ab. Der Artname vernum kommt aus dem Lateinischen ver = Frühling.
Beschreibung
Die Frühlings-Knotenblume ist eine ausdauernde krautige Pflanze, die Wuchshöhen von 10 bis 30 cm erreicht. Sie bildet unterirdische Zwiebeln als Überdauerungsorgane aus und zählt daher zu den Zwiebel-Geophyten. Die etwa 2 cm dicken Zwiebeln werden vom scheidenförmigen Blattgrund gebildet und liegen circa 30 cm tief im Erdreich. Bereits im Frühsommer werden die Laubblätter wieder eingezogen- die Frühlings-Knotenblume gehört folglich zu den vorsommergrünen Pflanzen. Meist drei bis fünf breit-linealische, dunkelgrüne Laubblätter stehen an der Basis der Pflanze. Sie sind bis zu 20 cm lang und werden etwa 1 cm breit. Die Blütezeit erstreckt sich gewöhnlich von März bis April. An günstigen Standorten können jedoch bereits im Februar die auffälligen Blüten ausgebildet werden. Die duftenden, weißgefärbten, glockenförmigen, zwittrigen, dreizähligen Blüten hängen meist einzeln, selten zu zweit, nickend am Blütenstandsschaft. Die sechs Perigonblätter sind fast gleichlang und weisen an den stumpf-zipfelig auslaufenden und verdickten Blütenblattspitzen eine gelbgrüne, fleckenartige Färbung auf. Es sind sechs freie Staubblätter mit orangen Staubbeuteln vorhanden. Der Griffel ist keulenförmig. Der deutsche Name für diese Pflanzenart leitet sich von der frühen Blütezeit und dem knotenartigen, unterständigen Fruchtknoten ab. Die Nektarabsonderung der Frühlings-Knotenblume ist gering und damit ökologisch ohne Belang. Jedoch besitzt die Pflanze dünnwandige, saftreiche Diskuszellen, die von diversen Insekten angebohrt werden können. Bienen und Tagfalter treten als Hauptbestäuber in Erscheinung. Angelockt werden sie u.a. von dem veilchenartigen Blütenduft, der an den Saftmalen besonders intensiv ausgeprägt ist. Die befruchtete Samenanlage senkt sich nach der Blüte langsam zum Boden ab. Verbreitet wird die Pflanze durch Tiere, die deren Frucht, eine birnenförmige und fleischige fachspaltige Kapsel, fressen und den weißen kugeligen Samen wieder ausscheiden.
Ökologie/Schutz:
Die Frühlingsknotenblume wächst in Gruppen, bildet jedoch nur selten größere Bestände. Sie gilt nach der Bundesartenschutzverordnung als besonders geschützt und nach der Roten Liste als gefährdet.

Hello Helmut,
I have never seen these little spring flowers before, but they are certainly very beautiful. They have such a unique shape and their colors seem to speak of purity and freshness.
I imagine this could possibly be the tiny honey bees first taste of nectar after a long winter. I can hardly wait until we see our flowers starting to bloom here in Ohio.
