Picture no. 2 in the series on the genus Erebia
(Nympalidae, Satyrinae, Satyrini, Erebiina):
- Erebia pronoe
English: Water Ringlet
French: Le Moiré fontinal

Species information
Erebia pronoe is a species of mountain regions. It occurs in the Alps, the Pyrennes, Carapathian and Balkan mountains at altitudes between 900m and 2800m.
The upperside wing pattern is variable so that several distinct subspecies can be recognized.
Wing span: about 42mm.
Larval foodplants: grasses such as Festuca ovina and Festuca quadriflora.

The plant
The butterfly is resting on the particular formed infructescence of Biscutella laevigata of the family Brassicaceae.

Location
German Alps, below the Zugspitze close to the tree line at Riffelriss. Altitude: about 1600 m.

Hallo Peter,
Du hast eine tolle Sammlung von Erebia-Portraits auf TN, auch dieses zählt dazu. Ich sehe, dass man sich in die Fachliteratur knien muss, um Klarheit zu haben über die vielen Formen. Was mich immer wieder wundert: kümmern sich eigentlich die Erebien um alle die minimalen Unterscheidungsmerkmale bei der Partnerwahl? Viele Männchen besitzen Duftflecke, vielleicht geht die Post zum Teil auf geruchlichen Niveau ab.Du weisst da wohl mehr darüber.
