Papilio dardanus (Afrikanischer Schwalbenschwanz, Mouchoir Volant, Flying Handkerchief)


Papilio dardanus, auch African swallowtail, Mocker swallowtail oder Flying handkerchief genannt, ist ein ganz besonderer Schmetterling Afrikas. Der Schmetterling ist ein Meister der Batesschen Mimikry und hat einen ausgeprägten Polymorphismus. Ein Nachahmungskünstler unter den Ritterfaltern. Die Erstbeschreibung erfolgte 1776 durch Brown. Mit einer Flügelspannweite von 10 – 12 cm gehört Papilio dardanus zu den großen, exotischen Schwalbenschwänzen. Der männliche Schmetterling hat eine Weiße Grundfärbung mit schwarzen Flecken, wohingegen die Weibchen mit vielfältiger Erscheinung aufwarten.

Beschreibung
Die Vorderflügel des Schmetterlings sind weiß und tragen einen schwarzen Flügelsaum, der in der Spitzenregion einen weißen Fleck einschließt.
Die Unterseite von Papilio dardanus ist identisch mit der Oberseite, jedoch ist das Schwarz hier gegen Braun ersetzt.

Die Hinterflügel von Papilio dardanus sind ebenfalls weiß und tragen drei größere, schwarze Flecken. Die Langen Schwänze tragen einen dünnen, schwarzen Strich, der als Aderzeichnung zu erkennen ist. Direkt am Rand entlang können schwarze Zeichnungen vorhanden sein.
Die Unterseite zeigt eine dominante Aderzeichnung. Die drei Flecken der Oberseite sind hier in Braun vertreten. Generell wirkt das Weiß der Unterseite vergilbt.

Der Körper des Schmetterlings ist weiß und trägt je zwei Reihen schwarzer Punkte an den Seiten.

Geschlechtsunterschiede: Es gibt wohl kaum einen Schmetterling, bei dem der morphologische Unterschied der Geschlechter so stark und vielfältig ausgeprägt ist wie bei Papilio dardanus. Das Weibchen ist deutlich kleiner und trägt keine Schwanzfortsätze. Die Farbgestaltung variiert von schwarzweiß, braun orange weiß, schwarzgelb und schwarzweiß gelb.
Verbreitung
Der exotische Schwalbenschwanz, Papilio dardanus kommt in ganz Afrika und Madagaskar vor, womit er zu afrotropischen Faunenregion gehört, wenngleich Nordafrika bereits zur paläarktischen Region zählt.

What a splendid presentation!
Now only did you manage a terrific macro shto of this beautiful butterfly but also a close-up on the textures of his wings...how great!!!
The colors and tones her are wonderful and very well saturated and the DOF is spot-on - keeping the subject in excellent full-focus while blurring out the BG nicely.

What a brilliant picture with amazing pictured scene and terrific colours. Pictured by you butterfly is simply wonderful as well as the leaf which it is sitting on. What a marvellous butterfly you found, Heinz!
I should say this is a Mocker Swallowtail - Schein Schwalbenschwanz (Papilio dardanus), but I'm not sure at all.
It's a great idea to put the little box with such marvellous details of the wing. Both pictures are really astounding!
