Juhuuuuu, here we are again , and I like to show you one of the most fascinating butterflies I know.
A small clearwing - called Greta oto.

Greta oto is a brush-footed butterfly and a member of the clearwing clade.
Its wingspan is 5 - 6 cm.

Adults range from Mexico through Panama.
Greta oto visits common flowers like lantana, but prefers to lay its eggs on plants of the tropical nightshade genus Cestrum.

The red and purple striped caterpillars feed on these toxic plants and store the alkaloids in their tissues, making them distasteful to predators such as birds.
They retain their toxicity in adulthood.
The same alkaloids that make them poisonous also are converted into pheromones by the males, which use them to attract females.

I made this shot a longer time ago in the butterfly-house in Hamm.
Enjoy your sunday ...

Hello Sabine.

Very beautiful photograph of this butterfly. Sees all a lot delicate. Splendid colouring and a beautiful composition.

Gr. hans

Ciao Sabine, my today neighbour, splendid butterfly with fantastic trasparent wings, I never see before, thanks, great details and excellent sharpness, wonderful colors, superb macro, very well done, have a good Sunday, ciao Silvio

Hllo Sabine!
Thank you very much for comment to my Swedish photo :>

According to you picture Sabine, my today neighbour, I must say that I like a lot colouration of this image. The weather is rather cloudy and today is rathr "grey day" in Lodz so this presentation reminds me sunny summer days (even if it is impossible to meet this species in the wild in my region :>).
Very nice sharpness too. Maybe only flash reflections are a little to strong (white areas on butterfly's wings).
All the best from Lodz!

Hi Sabine

Ouch, I almost got arc eyes from that brilliantly luminous reflections on the
see-through wings. What a pretty picture to behold!

This wonderful composition does a magnificent job to present the beautiful
clearwing in all its gorgeous splendour. The bumped up saturation and the
well captured details all adds to the outstanding visual impact.

Great work and TFS.

bonjour sabine
un tres beau specimen mais je vais quand même critiquer le fait qu'il manque le bout de l'antenne!!!

Your "Clearwing" is a charmer indeed Sabine, with those lovely, transparent wings, but what I like in this photo is that huge compound eye with near-vertical striations. TFS this wonderful image from your archive MF.

You are happy photographer. You managed to meet such beauty.
You are great photographer. You managed to create a true masterpiece shooting such beauty. All is brilliant, especially POV and composition, lights and colour reproduction, precise exposure of the image and stunning details. My congratulations and TFS.

Hello Sabine,
greta oto is a beautiful butterfly.
You have captured it a nice way, the colours are fine and natural. About the flash ;-))), It's nice to see you avoid to get to much reflection in the wings.
If I shall nit picking you picture, it's a bit tight in front, a piece of the antenna is missing.
Otherwise it's a very fine picture.
Well done, mf.

klasse macro von dem hübschen schmetterling! :-) die durchsichtigen flügel sind wirklich faszinierend; schärfe und
farben sind perfekt, schade nur, dass einer der fühler ein wenig abgeschnitten ist.
good job & viele grüße, thor.

Hello Sabine,
A fine capture of this striking and interesting Ithomid butterfly taken from your archives.
The use of slash is just right to show its features with fine sharpness, colours against a natural looking Bg.
This is one of the few species that looks the same with the wings open or closed!
Thanks and all the best,

Hallo Sabine,
Fantatisk a butterfly, macro photo ...
Light, color and sharp detail are very good.
Best wishes,

Hello Wishnu,
Amazing colours and sharpness. Very nice composition and Background.

Hi Wishnu friend!

Here in Venezuela I have seen this butterfly (or similar) and I must congratulate you because this is a beautiful insect but very nervous, always difficult to photograph for their movement and their tendency to remain in areas of low luminosity. The work we've done is perfect, the use of flash is masterful.

Hallo Sabine,

Wow, what a great macro capture of the beautiful butterfly with almost transparent wings! A very exotic species of the butterfly!

Very colorful details. The textures of the wings are wonderfully shown. I like the sharpness and POV here with great natural colors. A great composition!

Viele Gruesse,

hello Sabine
splendid macro photo, the output of feathers really exceptional, bravo!
keep photographing! TFS

Hello Sabina,

very nice macro from this beautiful butterfly.
Exellent sharpness and fine colours.

Hallo Sabine
A wonderful display of purity and innocence I see when I look at this lovely image. The details captured is an absolute feast to look at, especially the shiny wings, with its variation of colour and splendour. The green leaves emphasise the details of this beauty to its best. I was indeed a pleasure to look at this great image. Stunning photography. Best regards and thanks for sharing.

Hi Wishnu

Hallo Sabine!

Hi My Blue-eyed friend:)

Though i could not see blue ayes here, this is utterly amazing macro capture of this transparent-winged beauty with impeccable clarity from an impressive POV.
TFS and have a great night MF Sabine!

Hallo Sabine

Hello Sabine,
Indeed, these butterflies are fantastic and your capture really lovely showing the crispy transparent wings clearly. Wonderful colours too and nicely framed.
TFS and cheers, Ulla

Hello Sabine,

Yeah, that is an interesting design!
In fact it reminds me of the sails of modern windsurfers, maybe this is where they got the idea hehehe...
A fine piece of macro work - fine light and lovely details, and the subject is nicely isolated from the back!

Pablo -

Hello Sabine,
a splendid macro shot of this very beautiful butterfly taken from an excellent POV with superb sharpness and bright colours, well composed.
Best regards

Looks great on my laptop Sabine, love the way the flash shows off those beautiful transparent wings.
Very nice details & colors,
Well done!

great portrait, TFS Ori

Hi Wishnu,

The leaves are framing well the butterfly. The macro point view is showing the details and colors of the Greta oto butterfly. It is sharp and clear. the surrounding light is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.

Hi Sabine

Yes I saw this species, or one like it in Costa Rica. In the rainforest they literally dissapear when the take off, the clear wings are very effectively in making them invisible.
Excellent composition, sharpness, details, POV, DOF and OOF background.

Dear Sabine,

This is a very CLEVER shot - showing the insect - in front of a coloured background, thus demonstrating the transparency of the wings.

We also have window-winged moths in South Africa i.e. they have no scales on those areas opposed to window winged moths/butterflies, which have white splotches on black wings...

I like the way you controlled the depth of field - leaving the body blurred, thus emphasising the transparency of the wings.

Did you use the flash or were there spot lamps on the wall/ceiling?

Very well presented,
Have a nice week-end
Warm Regards

Hello Sabine, It's so beautiful your photo... congratulations! Florin

hi sabine!
sharp and fine pic on a very beautiful butterflie!
good work!
