hello tn,
i found this Melampyrum arvense on dry limestone area, here in southwestern germany, rheinland pfalz.
The field Cow-wheat is a hibernating green, annual plant, so a therophytes, plant height 10 to 30 centimeters reached. It is around a half parasite on cereals and other grass species, so we find the field Cow-wheat in particular on (calcareous), arable land, hence the common name German. The branched stem is erect and weak. The leaves are linear to lanceolate, the lower ones entire, the upper toothed at the base.

The flowers are arranged in a cone or walzlichen, year-old inflorescence. The bracts are pale to lilac red. The bracts are egg-lanceolate, or rarely purple colored yellow and green have in the lower part grannenförmige teeth. The flowers are hermaphrodite zygomorph. The fluffy hairy cup is almost as long as the corolla tube. The crown is 2 to 2.5 centimeters long, the tube is yellow to white, the lips are reddish and the upper lip is curved helmet-shaped. The lower lip is located on the edge straightened almost on the upper lip, and the fact Kronschlund almost closed. The flowering period extends from May to August. There will be insect pollinated or self-pollination.

The oval fruit capsule narrowed at both ends. The seeds are spread by ants (myrmecochory).

The chromosome number is n = 9 [1]

Hi Christian,
