Marbled White (Melanargia galathea)

Resident
Range expanding.

The Marbled White is a distinctive and attractive black and white butterfly, unlikely to be mistaken for any other species. In July it flies in areas of unimproved grassland and can occur in large numbers on southern downland. It shows a marked preference for purple flowers such as Wild Marjoram, Field Scabious, thistles, and knapweeds. Adults may be found roosting halfway down tall grass stems.

This species is widespread in southern Britain and has expanded northwards and eastwards over the last twenty years, despite some losses within its range.

Conservation status
UK BAP status: not listed
Butterfly Conservation priority: low
European threat status: not threatened

European/world range
Most of Europe (except Scandinavia) and North Africa and eastwards to Iran. It is stable in most European countries.

Foodplants
Red Fescue (Festuca rubra) is thought to be essential in the diet of larvae but Sheep's-fescue (F. ovina), Yorkshire-fog (Holcus lanatus), and Tor-grass (Brachypodium pinnatum) are also eaten. It is thought that several other grasses may be used, but the full range is not known.

Habitat
Colonies occur on unimproved grassland where a range of grass species, including Red Fescue, form a tall sward that is cut or grazed infrequently. The strongest populations are found on chalk or limestone, but a range of habitats is used, including woodland rides and clearings, coastal grassland, waste ground, set-aside, road verges, and railway embankments.

Hello Heinz,
You are bored by points ;-) I notice a Raynox lens ! Good team (FZ50 + DCR150) in your talended hands. This pretty butterfly is common in my Alps. Good sharpness and excellent DOF. Very pleasant blurred background. Instructive note in spirit of TN but take care your text is in double ?!?!
Bravo my friend and TFS,
Christian

Hi Heinz.
What a long pause you have held but this shot compensates all waiting. Amazing pictured scene, superb sharpness and details of the charming butterfly and so beautiful plant. BG is perfect at its colourfulness and blurriness. Lighting, exposure and composition are blameless. Bravo and best wishes.
Alexei.

Hello Heinz,
Very beautiful capture of this lovely butterfly that we don't have here, but I've seen it in the Alps. Excellent composition showing sharp details and I like its position and the colours very much.
Many thanks and best wishes, Ulla

Hallo Heinz,
Vielen Dank.
Aber wiese keine Punkte???? Versteh' ich nicht!
Aber wie Du willst ...
Gruß

Hello Heinz.
It is a very beautiful and elegant capture.
Nice exposure, good detils and great moody but clear atmosphere.
A great work MF, best regards, Felipe.

Hallo Heinz,
Peter

Hi Heinz,
outstanding shot of this beautiful Marbled White with sharp details and perfect exposure. You really have some fabulous butterfly shots, I enjoyed your portfolio. You have handled the harsh lighting well here and a precise DOF has let the subjects stand out from the BG well. Excellent POV to capture this classical pose and very nicely composed. Kudos.
TFS.
