On my previous picture, I showed the same specimen with closed wings. Here, you see just the opposite - the specimen with widely opened wings nicely exposing its beautiful upperside wing pattern:
- Vanessa atalanta
- family: Nymphalidae

English: Red Admiral
French: Le Vulcain
German: Admiral

Please, compare the underside wing pattern on my previous post where you will find some further notes, in addition.

Southern Ruhr-district in Germany where the North German lowlands start to become hilly. Buddleia bush in my garden.

- bright natural light
- no wind
- handheld

Stunningly sharp image of a Red Admiral, Peter.
Each colour and detail on its open wings is life-like.

Hi Peter.
One of the best detailed and represented Vanessa Atalanta I ever seen. Simply brilliant details, POV and composition. You are great master of DOF selection and now DOF is precise and ratio of blurriness/sharpness is superb. Flowers are reproduced so nicely and BG is very impressive too. Kind wishes and TFS. Well done.

Hello Peter,
A great open-wing macro of this '4 A's butterfly' that would have been totally sharp if it had not twitched its antennae when you took this.
Otherwise you show the Red Admiral with excellent sharpness and detail in this almost full-frame presentation.
Thanks and have a good weekend,
Best wishes,

hello Peter
great sharpness and beautiful colors
good details of the butterfly
greeting lou

Great image.
Lovely colors.
Very well done,

Hi Peter
Perfect sharpness, great diagonal compo and nice tight (but not too tight) crop. Maybe you could do a little noise reduction in background
I like it very much

Hi Peter,
Outstanding close-up of this beautiful Red Admiral with immaculate sharpness, colours and details. Superb lighting and I like this diagonal composition. The natural BG looks good.

* Thanks again for identifying the species of my butterfly posting.

Hi Peter!

Perfect macro of very beautifull butterfly. Opened wings show us more colours. Even cyan spots are very well visible. Great reminder of summer time.

Great shot of the Red Admiral. Your use of f/10.0 gave you enough space to work with which kept the whole butterfly in focus. You caught it's wings at just the right time.

Very nice - Bob

Great shot Peter. The shot is amagingly beautiful, sharp and colored.

Hi Peter,

Hello Peter,
Like me your surviving the winter by extracting fond memories from the archive! This is a superb macro of the Red Admiral on a Buddleia showing every detail very sharply and the light and colours are perfect too. Let's hope the strange climate doesn't reduce the number of insects this coming summer!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla
