|Pericerya purchasi Meskell 1788|
Common name: Cottony cashion scale
Periserya (Icerya) purchasi is a serious pest of citrus, Pittosporum sp, very common in cretan fauna. It can be also found on several weeds as in picture. In this case it is shooted on Melissa officinalis.
The mature females (actually hermaphrodites) have bright orange-red, yellow, or brown bodies ( males tiny winged and they are very rare). The body is partially or entirely covered with yellowish or white wax. The most conspicuous feature is the large fluted egg sac, which will frequently be two to 2.5 times longer than the body. The egg sac contains about 1000 red eggs. Eggs hatch into crawlers in a few days during warm weather but take up to two months to hatch in winter. The crawlers are red with black legs and antennae as that in in picture. They settle along leaf veins and begin to produce the white cottony secretion they are known for.
This scale infests twigs and branches. The cottony cushion scale can severely damage trees, resets, and nursery stock. Decreased tree vitality, fruit drop, and defoliation result from the feeding of this scale.
Vedalia beetle (Rodolia cardinalis ) is the most effective natural enemy.
The ants protect scale insects from predators and parasites in order to farm the honeydew the scales produce.

Hi Nikos,a very interesting species but your pic are not the best to understand how is made, the detail are very very poor, perfect only in the small ant on the right,no problem, the next pic will be better,i'm sure knwoing you....ehehe....have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano
A good shot of this interesting insect that looks like to be made of cotton but details are not ideal. Your subject was not properly focused.I can see a rather sharp focus on ant and a very tiny pink colored insect sitting on the white bug/insect.Wish you a better shot next time,
Ciao Nikos, not your best macro focus is on ant, but very interesting specie, may be better next time, my friend, ciao Silvio
