No idea what this insect is, ID please. Seen on a walk down to a monastery o n the isolated shores of south Samos.
Again not the best lens for this subject, but the light is reasonably good.

Hello Geoffrey,
What an unusual looking fly image you have captured. I checked all my guide books and can't come up with an ID. The uniquely shaped head is unlike any I have ever seen. I have seen some with the same type of wing markings, but that is about it. Thank you for sharing this interesting specimen.
