Class: Insecta
Order: Odonata
Family: Libellulidae
Genus: Trithemis
Species: T. annulata

The Violet Dropwing is one of our most strikingly pretty dragonflies. It's a medium-sized species of African origins which is reasonably common and widespread along the Mediterranean coast. Trithemis annulata females have a yellow abdomen and a white-and-yellow thorax, both of which are marked with strong black lines. She also has a sizeable deep-yellow patch at the base of her hind wing. But the species' showcase feature is really the violet colour of the adult male's thorax and abdominal segments 1-7. In fact, this purple colour is the combination of a bright red ground colour overlaid with a fine bluish pruinescence. To complete the male's garish outfit, his face, eyes and S8-10 are bright red and the vertex around his occelli is a shiny, metallic purple.
It is found in Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Ethiopia, France, Gambia, Ghana, Greece, Guinea, Israel, Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Réunion, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and possibly Burundi. It was also recently recorded in the Maltese islands in 2005 and found breeding in 2007.

Trithemis annulata

È diffusa in gran parte dell’Italia centro‑meridionale e nelle grandi isole. Mancano segnalazioni per Umbria, Abruzzo e Molise.

Excellent Luciano. A beautiful specimen, great position and light and sharpness. Good compositon and presentation. Congratulation and thanks for sharing it. Un saludo.

Another beautiful photo from Rhodes Luciano! Very good composition, fantastic lighting and impressive sharpness.

This is not Selysiothemis nigra for sure!

1. Selysiothemis nigra never has amber wing bases (the orange colour at the base of the wings clearly visible in your photo).
2. The colour of the adult male Selysiothemis nigra is black. The female and the young male are mostly brown. The specimen in your photo is mostly yellow.
3 Selysiothemis nigra has characteristic white almost translucent wing veins not yellow and black veins like your specimen.
4. The pterostigmas of Selysiothemis nigra are pale and short with thick black posterior and anterior veins forming a contrasting “equals sign” (=) very different of the pterostigma of the specimen in your photo.

I have posted a photo of Selysiothemis nigra which you can find

The specimen in your photo is an immature Trithemis annulata (Palisot de Beauvois, 1807) . The amber wing bases and the yellow veins are good diagnostic characteristics.

I hope that this time I have convicted you with my determination.

Hi Luciano

Nice pose. Good sharpness especially on the abdomen and wings. With all the natural sunlight on this dragonfly, the highly reflecting eyes might have looked better without the flash. Still a good capture.

Hello Luciano.

Thank you for that picture of this Selysiothemis nigra, landing on the flower.

The composition of the picture, descending diagonal is quite attractive.
The point of view showing us the complete body and the wings is interesting.
The sharpness is perfect and it is possible to see many details.
The depth of field is correct and the background more or less correct.
The colours are natural and enough vivid.
The contrast should have be a little bit more pronounced, giving us a better perception of the nervation from the wings.

Anyway this is a great photo.

Thank you for the sharing. See you soon on trek nature for other pictures.

Bonjour Luciano,
Bon après-midi.

Lovely capture of the The Violet Dropwing! Great composition wit h lovely colors and light.

Salut Luciano
