Ophrys iricolor Desf., 1807

Part of the theme "Wild Orchids of Lesvos Island, Greece".

The Rainbow Ophrys has a large and long (about 2 cm) lip, almost horizontal, with wide V shaped gorge in the base and, characteristically purple coloration in its underneath surface. The large iridescent blue speculum gives its name to this species.
This well known species grows from Greece in the west to Anatolia and the Middle East. It does not exist in the central Mediterranean bassin, where O. eleonorae takes its place. Distributed through central and southern Greece, Aegean islands, while in Ionian islands it has been found only in Cephalonia. It flowers on February-April. (Greek Orchids, Ophrys.be)

Il a un large et long labelle (environ 2 cm), presque à l’horizontale, avec une gorge en V à la base et une coloration pourpre sur sa surface. Le dessous rouge du labelle est très caractéristique. Le large speculum blue iridescent a donné son nom à l’espèce.
Cette espèce bien connue habite l'est du bassin méditerranéen, de la Grèce à l'ouest jusqu'en Anatolie et au Proche Orient. Elle n'existe pas dans le bassin méditerranéen central où elle est remplacée par O. eleonorae. On la trouve dans la Grèce centrale et du Sud, dans les îles de la mer Egée. Dans les iles ioniennes, on la trouve seulement à Cephalonia. (Greek Orchids, Ophrys.be)
Elle fleurit en février-avril.

Με μεγάλο (περίπου 2 εκατοστά) χείλος, σχεδόν οριζόντιο, με βαθιά εντομή σχήματος V στη βάση του και χαρακτηριστικό ιώδη-πορφυρό χρωματισμό στην κάτω επιφάνειά. Κατανέμεται σε όλη την κεντρική και νότια Ελλάδα, νησιά του Αιγαίου, ενώ στα Ιόνια βρέθηκε μόνο στην Κεφαλονιά. (Greek Orchids)
Ανθίζει τους μήνες Φεβρουάριο ως Απρίλιο.

A lovely portrait of this beautiful orchid. Good exposure has caught the subtle detail of the lip marking, and the soft lighting adds to the attractiveness of the picture.
