A truly beautiful and amazing place for me- the Nisyros Volcano at Nisyros Island. This volcanic island is part of the Dodecanese Islands. The volcano has a 4 km wide caldera.

The Nisyros volcano is the most active remain of the Cos caldera that exploded aprox. 150.000 years ago. Nisyros, Yali, Strongyli, Pyrgoussa, Pahia and Kefalos (at Cos) are the remains of a zone that is considered to be still active. A Magma chamber below Nisyros is only 3-4 km deep and still rising up.

Pease check the workshop photo for Sulphur holes of this semi active volcano

Volcano type: Stratovolcano, volcanic domes
Summit elevation: 680 m
Last eruptions:
1881-1887 - hydrothermic explosions of the crater "Micros Polyvotis"
1500 - hydrothermic explosions
1000-2000 B.C. - hydrothermic explosions of the crater "Stefanos"
5000-10.000 B.C. - hydrothermic eruptions of the Kaminakia craters
15.000-10.000 B.C. - building of postcalderic volcano domes
15.000 B.C. - effusive eruption of the central caldera of Nisyros ("Upper pumice")
25.000 B.C. - effusive eruption of the central caldera of Nisyros ("Lower pumice")
40.000-30.000 B.C. - effusive eruption ("Kira-Formation")
150.000 B.C. - first submarin eruptions
Typical eruption style Hydrothermal explosions, effusive volcano, volcano domes

Merhaba Selene!
At first view it looks like a "normal mountains", but reading your note I found a lot of interesting information. As for me it doesnt look like a volcano, or at least - active volcano. 4km is really a huge diameter.
POV is very nice and shows all texture and details.
TFS and all the best in 2010!
Friendly yours,

Hello Selen,
Interesting to see these images from this Greek vulcano and compare them to the vulcano we had a close look at on Lanzarote, similar but different, grey not black! Very fine captures showing sharp and interesting details.
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hello Selen,
Marvelous landscape with exceptional sharpness and superb colours.
Excellent contrast and a very good composition.

Such impressive rocky formations under shadow producing side illumination Selen, captured sharply with great depth of field and good exposure. However the fair landscape is not what I would expect from a volcanic terrain. On the other hand, the close up on the sulphur sources reveals the true identity of the area much better. Thanks indeed my friend, for these educative images.

Hello Selen,
Very intersting capture, with great colors and DOF. Amazing rocks structures and good note. The WS is interesting too. I wish you a happy New Year 2010!

hello Selen

Hi Selen,
There is something about the bare land that is very attractive to me. Even though there is really not much, and perhaps without any vegetation, we can really see the texture of the geological details that is unusaul to see. Really nice control of the strong light. Good details, and really nice definition of the fallen rocks and the land formation. A beautiful blue sky to go with it. Though I think the sky color is stronger than the earth tone. Beautiful regardless. My complements. Thanks. Happy 2010.

Hello Selen,
A very interesting image of this desolate looking area.. The composition is great, I like how you used the diagonal fissure to frame the mountain of volcanic rock. The landscape reminds me a lot of the Badland region of South Dakota.
I can tell it was a very sunny day, but you managed to control the exposure to your advantage. Excellent detail and natural color. Very informative notes!! TFS.

hello selene,
it must have been a great experience looking at this Volcano which looks like a mountain at a glance, the earthen tones look natural and the blue sky looks beautiful, nice details and textures,
well done,
tfs & regards
wish you happy new year 2010
